June 23, 201016 yr Hi there, have been asked to provide a quote for a new site. Client wants to essentially have a large listings site so that users can register and upload information about their local sports club / hobby etc. so over time the site will become large. Users should be able to have access to their own 'profile pages' (bit like Myspace / Facebook etc.) so they can edit it and also upload images etc. Site should be searchable. Have no problems with the look and feel etc. that should be fine but I am wondering what is the best CMS facility that would allow me to do this? Would Wordpress allow for this? How do you set up the members section and would it allow for 'Forgot my password' information. Also wondering how much to quote. That's the problem sometimes with clients as they can see something on a site that cost thousands to set up and think they can have it replicated for a few hundred. Any advice most welcome
June 24, 201016 yr If you don't know how to set this up, are you sure you should be quoting for it? Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. Personally, I would do it with Joomla! It is very easy to do with Joomla! providing you know what you are doing. I would be quoting a lot more than a few hundred though....
June 25, 201016 yr Agreed, if you don't know how to do it, you shouldn't be quoting for it - probably an occasion to bow out gracefully rather than risk a big fall. As mentioned, Joomla will do this - there are countless extensions that you can addon to it, some of them are social networks straight out of the box. I used Joomla on a few sites - but I try not to anymore as with more experience I now find it more clunky & cumbersome to work with. I certainly wouldn't be quoting a few hundred for something like this - its a big job with lots of elements that need to work & that need to be designed/styled....anyone that quoted a few hundred wouldn't be building a website that met the spec.
June 29, 201016 yr Author Thanks for the advice, I passed on this one as the timescales required wouldn't allow me to get to grips fully with joomla and all the add ons in time. I didn't say I would charge hundreds, would have quoted in the 4 figures, just that you know what some clients are like.
