What are the most important questions to ask a customer?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

When liaising with a customer what would your main questions be before taking on a project?

For example we try and ensure a project plan is created but how in-depth should this be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

David Webb

Here's a few...

1. What do you want to achieve with your site?

2. What is the demographics of your intended audience?

3. What other web sites do you like and why?

Will you pay me on time? :D

I like to spend a bit of time chatting about their business as well, to get a feel for their ethos and it also normally helps the client to relax a bit.

:)

I always give my clients this document to fill out - most write one word answers, but some fill it out properly and it really helps me understand what they're after, but it also helps to get it clear in their heads what they want/need. Download it here...

Ah yes - the joys of chasing final payments! - its always a good idea to casually slip into conversation about what percent of a down payment they need to make before you start a project.

my main one is finding out wether I can do the project, and within their budget, and on time. If you can do all 3 then you will earn the client's respect and become the "go to guy" for them.

And down-payments / deposits are always good for keeping your client focused...

Excellent Eskymo! I have been looking for something along these lines for a long time! It gives me an idea now of what o should ask my potential clients in the future before commiting to a project!

Many thanks for this Eskymo! As a complete beginner, this kind of help is invaluable.... I had already put together a similar document, but I think I'll be able to use a couple of ideas from yours to add to mine :)
