An idea struck me yesterday. How about we have an image making competition with photoshop users versus GIMP ones.... just for fun really. I could do with brushing up (ha ha) on my image making / editing skills anyhow.

 

Is anyone up for it and if yes, any ideas how we could do it?

I have always been a fan of "Tools do not a designer make" so this competition does nothing but put one designer against another, not program against program.

It's whatever you've been trained on. I prefer Photoshop as I've used it from my start in design. I did try GIMP once though when I was running a dual boot Ubuntu/Windows installation, I found it very unnecessarily complicated.

I agree entirely what you're saying.. would just like to see it in action. More to do with functionality of each tool to sort of compare the process you have to go through with each and thought it might then be useful for newbies who don't know which tool to chose?

 

So for instance; (very simple example I know) if we were to say create a logo with a beveled 3d effect, in this colour.... we could each create it and see how it's achieved by maybe making a brief summary of the steps we used.

 

Ah just an idea. I personally wouldn't be able to explain how to do something in photoshop that i have achieved in GIMP and would love to know step by step what differences there are and maybe some of the hangups each of the progs prove to have in the process.

That's exactly the way I feel except the other way around . The only issue I found, as I have to use Windows at work, was GIMPs window management. With a program like Virtual Desktops that helped with GIMP and many other things.

 

To me GIMP is light weight, portable and obviously free. For web design/development alone it's more then sufficient. I would imagine graphics professionals prefer Photoshop as it does seem to have more advanced features (from what I've heard) but those things don't effect me in any way.

 

GIMP is awesome. After using it for around 3-4 years (and learning to use the window management to my advantage) I would be really stuck without it to be honest.

It'd be helpful because I don't know my way around THE GIMP very well. Once I tried to find a circle shape tool and it took me a few hours...I actually don't think I ever found it.

Frisby; How long have you been using ps and what sort of thing do you think we should make to compare? I think it needs to be something fairly basic to start and we can list the steps we used to achieve it. You never know - maybe if you and I start off, others will join??

 

To the mods; where should we put this then? I don't think competition is appropriate as it is more about design tools and how to use them if we do it this way....

Uh...I've been using photoshop since I was a wee littl'un. Probably since I was four, so thats 11 years now. x3

 

Whatever we make, you should probably know I don't have a pen tool.

The other day I saw a guide to making a purty shiny television icon (like you would see for an app)...It'd be cool to make something like that since its useful to be able to do, however, I've never done it...Maybe we could start with something simple, like photo manipulation (colors n stuff).

Ok what about a header using a photo blended in somehow? Total completed image 500px by 100px. And we explain what we have done in nice steps so we can help ppl to create in either ps or gimp? Or is that too simple for a ps dude like yourself?

Maybe we could make it a header with the photo faded into a plain bg and with a title incorporated for some sort of woodland protection charity; make it a bit more realistic? "Britain's Forests"??

Okay. Maybe we could show how to do something with text effects, like have a drop shadow so its more legible if it overlaps the photo in some part.

I'm not a Photoshop guru, but I've tried Gimp and it's no where as powerful as Photoshop. Photoshop is expensive for a reason, it's beyond full featured. With that in mind, I'd be interested in seeing what GIMPer's come up with. I'd also like to know a step by step walk through on what they had to do to make it work in GIMP vs. How they would do it in Photoshop. I'm almost positive Photoshop will be half the steps. Please prove me wrong.

Ok I am away from today to the end of the week and being as it's an anniversairy hol, no laptop rule has been agreed (argh withdrawal symptoms coming!). So will crack on with this after I get back friday.
