April 8, 201016 yr Hi Everyone, Ive just moved a clients website to a new host for them as the old one was charging an arm and a leg, i said i would charge 150 euros to 200 euros (client is in Bulgaria), anyway, it turned into a complete nightmare, at first while testing there was an error I couldnt fix as it was a bespoke build in C# and I dont have a clue about C#, I asked the designer if he could take a look, and reluctantly he did after some pestering and he resolved the error. I asked the client to test the site, she said everything was cool so i went ahead and changed the domain name DNS to point to the new server, and for some reason the new DNS settings didnt go into BIND and this took nearly 3 days to resolve, it was stressing me out big time as i had promised the client it would be SIMPLE (maybe thats where i went wrong) anyway, after I got that sorted I had some normal permission issues etc, fixed them easily enough, but there was still one problem to do with image uploads, it was an Estate agents website. I tested everything, checked all the settings on the server, and started to go through all the files trying to find the issue, after about 5 hours i found a typo in the code, in one of the files there was images/pjpeg, I had seen it earlier but dismissed it because i was sure the code was right, it worked fine before on the old server and i hadnt changed anything, after hours of troubleshooting I came across this typo again, i removed the "p" and voila it worked. So i started to think the last developer has done this to p*** me off, because I told him i didnt understand C#, and I was sure he was upset i was touching his site, i had explained to the client its not too cool touching other developers websites but she assured me it was cool because he was too busy. anyway, I have a very good reason to think it was sabotage, and this will make you laugh, i spilt a drink on my laptop months back and funnily enough my "P" button doesnt work, i have to use an on screen keyboard to get it up, so this has concluded to me it was sabotage, there is no way in a million years i added this code, infact I know I have never even touched the code. So,,,, No1 Im pissed because a simple job has turned into a shed load of work, and No2 because Im sure the last developer did this to do my head in. So what do you think about it, have you had similar experience, and how much do you charge to move a site to a new host, i will never do it again, its the second time ive done it, and the first time was nearly as much stress as this, and if i divide my wage into hours, i probably earnt a few quid an hour My blood is still boiling so I had to get this off my chest. Tobes
April 8, 201016 yr Hi there, pjpeg is a valid extension when uploading via IE so the previous developer wasn't necessarily wrong. Perhaps show some of the code that isn't working and we can try to help you out...
April 8, 201016 yr Author Hi ElenMan, Oh my god, youve put this to bed, I really thought the last developer was trying to sabotage the work, thank god i didnt email him saying what I thought at the time, im such a twit.
