Hi I have some photoshop files of a few web page designs I had done, and I'd like to open them and make some changes. I wanted to ask if my version of Photoshop will allow me to do this (I've never used Photoshop before). I have an unopened copy of Photoshop Elements 5.0 but the box cover only refers to its photo processing capabilities, does this version allow web design changes also or just photos? My web designer created the files in photoshop but I wondered if perhaps he had a web design specific version that mine wouldn't be compatible with.

 

I would just open the box and try it out but if it doesn't do what I need I'd rather sell it and I'll get more for it if it's not opened.

I suspect that your designs were developed using the full photoshop version (there is not a specific web design version) which I would recommend if you are serious about design, however you can download a free trial version of elements to see what it can offer.

If it's unopened then just return it to the retailer. You should be able to get a refund.

 

I'd recommend purchasing the full version of Photoshop CS4. You can download a trial of this from the Adobe website.

If you want to have a look at the files you should download GIMP - it's free, and it can read photoshop files (not always perfectly, but it's very good) http://gimp.org

 

If you're really keen to have photoshop, I would recommend avoiding anything before the CS era - there are 4 CS editions, no4 being the most recent. The differences between them are quite small, but they do definitely improve as they go along.

as suggested, download the trial of PSE and then you can see if it is enough for your editing needs

How long do you intend to use it for? If it's for less than 30 days then download the full CS4 trial from Adobe which lasts for 30 days with all the features. It will open any kind of Photoshop file available.
