Hi there, I'm very new to website design and I recently downloaded a template and Ive been working in Flash CS3. I have managed to create buttons to open links to other sites and send emails but I dont have a clue how to get a video to play. I have created 3 buttons and for each button I wanted a sample video to load on the page or in a separate window once it is clicked. I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions much appreciated. I already have my videos converted to flv. I just dont know how to get them to play on the page once the buttons are pressed.

Hi Crispies. I'm certainly not a guru when it comes to flash so this is a very vague description but there are two ways i'd go about it. The first and easiest way is to directly import the video straight into the fla using the "import video" option. This way automatically gives each video a skin with controls and puts it onto your stage. The skins can be customized with what ever colour you want, and you can choose what kind of controls you want on the skin.

 

If you already have you own buttons on stage that you want to open separate videos there are a few ways to go about it and im not brilliant at any!

 

Have a look into the UI loader component feature.

 

The UI loader can be added to the stage (by putting it onto the timeline or through actionscript using the addChild).

 

videos or other swfs can then be loaded externally into the loader by going into the Components Inspector and using the "source" parameter to reference the video (which needs to saved in the same folder as the Flash file youre working on.

 

Again, i'm quite new to flash so this is as helpful as i can be on this subject, maybe someone more experienced could elaborate the process a bit more for you. Or give you a better option.

Thanks for the reply. I'm still completelty baffled though. Im by far no web designer. I'm actually a cameraman and just trying to set up a site by myself. I basically found a template site and made the necessary adjustments. I'm wandering if it is possible to make one of the buttons I have created load a pop up window which I can size for my videos to play.

 

I tried using the component way of adding a video but for some reason the flv playback doesnt show on my list of items.

 

I'm also having issues with the centering of the page. I've published it but it is positioned to the left. any suggestions much appreciated.

we've all been there so don't get stressed first point.

 

Secondly, what you really need is someone like me who can sort it out for you but maybe you're not in a position to face charges but that's not a problem.

 

What would be useful to see is the .fla you've created, or just copy the code here.

 

I'll have a look, I'm sure I know the answer to this - I've done loads of video online.
