December 17, 200718 yr Hey all I'm doing a quick website for a photographer and he would like to use the Lightbox facility. I'm just wondering what dimension I should make his images relating to screensize and load time. What would you recommend the maximum dimension of the images should be? Thanks E
December 17, 200718 yr Good question. The generally held view is that most people run a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, however Screen Resolution ≠ Browser Window Resolution - not everyone uses a fully maximised window and some have toolbars and what-not. This article gives lots of useful data to help you make an informed decision.
December 17, 200718 yr Author I'm designing for 1024 x 768 as the minimum so I guess that so long as my image height is set to 550px I should be OK. Cheers. E
December 17, 200718 yr Don't forget to allow for browser toolbars, tabs and the lightbox viewer bottom section - I'd say a max of 480px tall would be a bit safer
December 17, 200718 yr Author really - I'll see how it looks - I don't want the images to be too small...I know what you mean though as I've got tins of toolbars at the top of my browser and at the bottom as well...
December 18, 200718 yr You're a fountain of useful links you are - cheers! I wouldn't go that far! Fountain of useless links maybe In all seriousness it can be a difficult one to judge. At no point can you guarantee that people will be able to see the images on every machine out there in the interweb. So we just need to make pragmatic decisions and go for the old 80/20 rule.
December 18, 200718 yr I do a website for my local camera club. I usually like to make landscape pictures nominally 640 * 480 and portrait 480 * 640. I'm not happy with the portrait size as it is too big height wise for the page, but I feel if I make them any smaller they lose impact. Have a look at the following pages to see what I mean ... Brians Page Ray's Page Ross's Page
December 18, 200718 yr Yeh the 640 tall images mean scrolling even at 1280x1024 and the image just about fits in a screen if I scroll slightly
