I've been approaced to create a site which would have paid membership registration, membership login, free access area.

 

Never done anything like this before, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

 

Getting someone else to do it doesn't count

If you've never done anything like that before then you've got alot of learning to do before you can create a website that does all those things.

 

I'd use PHP and SQL.

 

Learn about server sessions for the logins.

Learn about either PayPal or GoogleCarts for the payment options.

Then, if you want to automate interfaces between the payment gateway and the website, you'll also have to swot up on API interfacing.
