Hi, just wanted to pick your brains as far as the legality of doing some freelance web design while being unemployed.

 

Yes it would be paid, figured you guys would have come across this issue before.

it probably depends on how much you are doing and whether you are claiming benefits or not, technically getting paid to do websites whilst claiming is benefit fraud.

 

If you're not claiming i think your allowed to earn a small amount per year without declaring yourself self-employed, but not sure how much you can earn before declaring (somewhere around £2-3000 I think).

 

All of the above is based on 'what my mate Dave told me', so don't base a career on it

as I understand you can be paid upto 16 hours a week(without effecting benefits) and that's legit I would confirm that 1st with CAB or DWP though

I think that its actually 16 hours or x amount of money. I interviewed a guy a while ago for another company, he was on benefits and could only earn up to about £80 per week before his benefits stopped. Although I believe any earnings can have an effect.

 

As for doing it whilst not claiming, I have no idea. sorry

If you're doing work for yourself and earning money, you have 8 weeks to declare yourself from the point where you start working and all money earnt must be assessed at the end of the year for tax purposes, even if you don't go over the threshold.

 

It's worth doing because the ramifications would be dire should you not register.

I didn't know about the amount of money stipulation, only the 16 hours Darren, knowing the DWP they'll look for any reason they can get to stop benefits plus the woman on the dwp helpline seemed pretty clueless
