August 25, 200917 yr Hi, Just looked at the stats for screen resolution at http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp So the most common resolution is 1024 768 . . . and beyond. Only 4% of web browsers use 800 x 600. Is it safe or fair to forget about building for that size. Isn't it time to make best use of all the available space with higher res monitors? Also, what's the best way of viewing any new designs at the various resolutions so we can best understand different users are going to see any site we produce? thanks, Jo
August 25, 200917 yr Not many people build for 800 x 600, thats a really old resolution and people proabally only have it if they got one of the old beige/white computers I develop mine for 1024 x 768 and up
August 25, 200917 yr Author Thanks, But does that have any implications for accessibility? I suppose it's a balance between making best use of technology as it evolves without forgetting those who can't keep up - maybe for financial reasons. Jo
August 25, 200917 yr hi i design for 1024 x 768 now. you could be clever and incorporate some clever javascript and when it detects an 800 screen it could change the layout. let me know if you need an example of this, I did one for somebody once. brian

Unless you just accept the fact the 800 x 600 will get a raw deal. But as long as they can still get the main info I think its a necessary evil and they will just have to do a bit of extra sideways scrolling!
August 25, 200917 yr If I'm doing a fixed width site I tend to do it 960px wide. I use 960 because it is easy to divide for columns and most of the information will still be there for someone using 800x600.

Same here, I also use 960px now for my designs so that on 1024x768 and above it looks fine on all of them while still looking not too bad on 800x600.
September 5, 200917 yr Previously people used to go for 800*600. But that is old thing. With the trend of high resolution screens that trend is almost gone. Now mostly people go for 1024*768. The difference in clarity with this resolution can be easily observed. So I would recommend you to go for 1024*768. Murs
September 5, 200917 yr Hi josoap, this site explains a lot http://960.gs/ . Personaly im going for 1024x768, even eee PCs has 1024 width resolution so 960 grid system just suitable.
September 5, 200917 yr The web developer toolbar for FireFox (extention) is a must for designers... You can declare some screen resolutions to resize firefox to at the click of a button. I use it on every single design. I have the list of resolutions below configured for it. 800 x 600 1024 x 768 1280 x 800 1280 x 1024
