August 17, 200917 yr hello all. well my bands album is coming out soon, and i thought it was the perfect time to buy a .com domain. not only because it looks professional but because it's a easy way of everyone having access to the free download of the album (lyrics, videos etc etc). now, let's say i buy the domain at godaddy.com ... right? so let's say i bought lolercopters.com. nice. then.... how do i build a website for it? any recommended software? not looking for flash or anything, just a easy builder (like the one homestead has ... where you can drag things around. im really bad with coding and html). so my 1st question is: what software or way can i use to build a website, that's professional. because i know i could simply redirect the domain name to a wordpress blog or such. but no, i want to build one. 2nd question: do i need to pay extra for extra pages? for example.. i want a lyrics page. so the address should be: www.lolercopters.com/lyrics.html do i need to pay for those extra pages (i think they are called sub domains im not sure though) or how many do i get? 3rd question and last: do i upload the pages in godaddy.com? or how does that work? August 17, 200917 yr The Website and the Domain are two separate things. In addition to having the domain name you also need to have web space with a hosting provider. When you have designed your website, you upload your website to your hosting provider. When someone types in like http://www.domain.com the domain directs to the hosting provider who directs it to your site. You would upload your website via either FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or through a file manager which you get with your hosting provider. FTP is much easier as you can just drag and drop the files.

FTP is much easier as you can just drag and drop the files. very helpful information. are there free hosting providers? also i already have a ftp account, where i store songs and images, etc etc. would that work? so i understood your post very well, however ... how would i go about directing the domain to the hosting provider and vice versa? also, wouldn't i be able to direct my hosting provider to any .com address? or is there a verification process (which i hope there is, and think there is)? it's that process i'm confused about. i will buy the domain, set up the hosting provider. then how do i direct my domain to my hosting provider? and my hosting provider to my domain? that's the only thing i'm confused about right now. thank you for your time and patience.

August 17, 200917 yr No problem - its my job Godaddy is in the US and is well 'cheap' - like I said earlier pay a bit more for a decent quality of service that is in the UK as opposed to the USA (speeds will be faster). You are free to choose whoever you like but see what else is around before committing. PS: Don't be fooled by these people offering unlimited discspace and bandwidth for some stupid price like $1. Its not true and you can face terrible downtime as a result - its whats called overselling.
August 18, 200917 yr It's a good idea to get your domain name, hosting service and ISP from three different providers. This is so that if you have a problem with one you can move that without affecting the others. For instance, if you have a free webspace from your isp and get poor service you will have to change your ISP and probably lose the domain name which usually has the isp's name as part of the domain name like your-site.isp-name.com. Domain name provider and hosting service separately means that you can keep your domain name for ever and move hosting service if there's a problem. I would avoid getting both your domain name and hosting from Godaddy. You can get free ftp clients for uploading, but IE has one that is perfectly adequate for batch uploading/downloading. Buy the domain name first, then get the hosting service, then go back to the domain name provider and set the DNS addresses to the ones given to you by the hosting service. Then you have to wait one or two days for it to "get around the internet" before you can see your website. You don't have to pay for extra pages as long as you are within the limit of your hosting service contract(usually very large).
