I'm developing a CMS where you can add a free suffix to the page URLs. Google's own Search Engine Optimization Started Guide says imitating static page content is fine with them. But what's your experience, is there any point in putting the extra .html in the end these days? Will it get your ranking any higher?

 

I think I'm leaving the option along with Clean/Pretty URL in the CMS, but will be not using the .html suffix anymore on my next personal site.

I was going to drop any .html/.php/.asp extension for my HTML documents for my next projects. That they they stay neutral to the technology underneath.

I like extensionless urls too. Apart from the geek factor, they look better when used in adverts (on or offline) and are easier to give out over the phone.

Only downside is they can sometimes look like directories instead of files. That said I'm also planning on migrating to extenionless URL's as soon as I get the chance.
