Well, this is my first attempt at the League Table page in my new project.

Unfortunately, it's only a screen shot as I've not sorted out any Windows hosting yet (the project is being written in ASP.NET C#) but I'd be grateful for any comments on the design thus far.

To be completely honest, the header looks a bit garish. The green gradient is a bit too much, and the blue colour you've chosen for the menu just doesn't fit.

 

Also there doesn't seem to be any over-arching design. The table is clearly just styled as it comes and it's polished-bevel effect doesn't go with the rest of the site's heavy colours and black borders. Table components like that are absolutely fabulous, but you need to style it so the whole site is consistent.

 

If the logo is basically what you have to work from, I see how you have a hard job. However you've not really picked out the key colours and also, the logo uses a serif font, but you have a used non-serif font with a drop-down effect which doesn't really match up.

You make some great points, I have been struggling with the header tbh, although I've only been at it for a few hours.

Yes, the logo is really all I have to work with at this point.

 

I'll have another stab at the header when I get back home from work tonight - time to have a flick through my Web Designers Ideas Book, methinks!

I'm glad that my comments were appreciated. If I were you I'd use the table for inspiration & recolour it to match the logo (the table would look good in green I think - but a not too saturated green.

 

Use the nice lines in the table - thin subtle borders, white highlights and subtle gradients.

 

Figure out what other content you have, style that to match the table but perhaps use serif fonts to match the logo. If you then do the navigation to match the table, the header bit might come naturally?

 

I find it's always best to start of styling the real stuff (text, tables other content), then the designy-bits - the navigation, headings & other graphic tend to flow more naturally from what's already there.

Second design wins! You could possibly make the header graphic a bit thinner though. On smaller screen resolutions it would take up a fair bit of valuable page space. If you really wanted to be a clever clogs with Flash, you could have the football roll onto the screen then dissolve into your logo...or something...

Thanks for that comment. To be honest, I'm designing at 1024 x 768, and I think that the height of the header is just about ok.

The logo that I've got to work with is not a vector graphic, so it's not scaling too well I'm afraid.

 

RE the Flash, unfortunately, my budget hasn't quite stretched that far to be able to buy the software and being the responsible person that I am, I won't entertain "acquiring" a "back-up" copy from somebody else - just the principles I live by tbh.

if your flash skills are up to it, just use the 30day trial of flash instead of acquiring one from somewhere; that way it is perfectly legal and you have 30days to get it right

Hadn't thought about that....however, the flaw in that plan is the sentence "if your Flash skills are up to it" . lol.

Also, if the client wants to change anything after the 30 day period, I'd be a bit stuck.

Good guess!

 

Weird how different people work differently - I like to get the header nailed before I move on to the good stuff. Everytime I look at the site whilst I'm working on it, if the header's not correct, it just bugs me!

 

Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

 

You do give some great advice in your post, having said that. Once I've sorted out where I'm going to host it, I'll post the link up so that you can give it a good old going over!
