July 18, 200917 yr Only a matter of time before some one suggests a Mac Book Pro!? Personally I have been a big fan of HP laptops they look nice and shiney and run well with few problems that I know of. The problem is no matter how upto date your laptop is when you get it, in 6 months you'll find a better one for the same money and feel a little like you've missed out. Just got this for my father inlaw. upgraded the ram to 3GB and have to say I was really impressed at what a great little deal it was! alternativley if you can wait until windows 7 comes out I think at the end of the year(??) and avoid vista and all its irritating little issues. July 18, 200917 yr Can recommend NOT to get an ASUS. Mine had some overheating problems and took 5 repairs to fix it.. luckilly they did it for free But it still has the issue it just works now, and I have to use a laptop cooler, which isn't really ideal.
July 23, 200917 yr what do you plan on doing on your laptop? Ah yes, I'll take that role before anyone else gets to it I hereby recommend the Macbook Pro. Pros: Much nicer usability, especially when designing, and the screen colors are deep! And you can get them in pure aluminum. Also less games support, so less distractions. Cons: It's a hefty price, and not the best choice for backwards compatibility. When you want to check how the colors look on a screen that's not as fancy as your Mac, or simply doing IE6 testing, it's best to use some cheap PC. Conclusion: Bug the spouse or parents for cash to buy one, and I'm sure you can dumpster dive a good Pentium 3 that will run IE6 for backwords compatibility and making your site nice on a crappy screen/browser. It's the best of both worlds!
July 23, 200917 yr Hahahahahahahahaha... (for those who don't know, Sam's comment relates to another thread) I've found IBM/Lenovo to be reasonable, Dell to be terrible, and Acer (recent models) to be pretty good. I'm talking about build quality and reliability.

July 23, 200917 yr I don't know if it's the case with all their models, but I've got a HP laptop with Vista on it which I got last year, since I've had it the case has cracked in several places, wireless functionality sometimes work (apparently I need a new motherboard to fix this problem according to other owners online who've reported the same problem), and I had to strip it down to re-apply thermal paste on the CPU (as the fan was constantly running at warp speed). Dell I would say are OK but not the best for build quality in my opinion.
