May 14, 200917 yr Hi Can anyone tell me which one of these two open source ecommerce bundles is the best suited for e commerce sites? Magento or Oscommerce?
May 14, 200917 yr If your server can handle it, then I'd say Magento. OSCommerce is pretty much obsolete now, it's very outdated. Has no scheduled updates (they said v3 was nearly complete in 2006). Most things that Magento can do out-of-the-box you need plugins for OSCommerce (resulting a load of compatibility errors), or some things OSCommerce that just can't do. Magento has a learning curve, a year ago it wasn't well documented, but by now you can find plenty of guides and tutorials. Any features that don't yet exist will probably be released shortly.
May 14, 200917 yr I prefer osC, I use a heavily modified version that I deploy for some customers which does more or less what Magento does, but doesn't eat up so much diskspace. I tried using Magento twice now but I just can't be arsed with it.
May 14, 200917 yr If osCommerce is dead (I suspect it is) and Magento is too server-hungry (I've heard it is), there are other free options... Zen Cart and PrestaShop are both free and may be worth a look. Don't run Prestashop on Windows though - stick to Linux if you choose it.
May 14, 200917 yr Gotta be Magento You do have to have a pretty decent webhost with fast servers to run it... It can be very resource intensive once you get products and visitors.
May 16, 200917 yr Hi, Oscommerce is complete crap and does not belong in the same conversation as Magento Development.
May 16, 200917 yr I wouldn't say it's complete crap - it's a really good base to build on, it's just that unfortunately it's kinda closed open source in a way, so updates to the basic system take years rather than weeks or months LOL As I said in my previous post, I use a heavily modified version that I deploy for some customers which does more or less what Magento does, but doesn't eat up so much diskspace. So with not much work it can be made into something really great.
June 15, 200917 yr Hi folks, I'm again here to update you guys. Have you tried Verson 1.3? It is out now and after updating it I have found my magento cart runs a lot faster now.
June 21, 200917 yr i have just recently been working on a clients site which is powered by ensepro they asked me just to redesign their site and from my first impression ensepro is a real contender for the future of ecommerce did not get a chance to browse through all the software but from what i saw i liked have worked with osc site prior and will be recommending ensepro to future clients whom are seeking ecommerce
