Xp or vista ... Simple question .. I currently use vista but I get constant problems and am wodering if I should go back to so, please share you opinions.

Vista, it's better.

I'd go back to xp, but i'm too lazy. Vista though, other than a pretty interface, doesn't really have alot more to offer, but it takes alot more.

If you're after a productive machine choose XP.

I completely disagree with the above comment, perhaps for certain things, XP would be the right choice, but if you have a good machine, that can run Vista, then there's no point using old software, particularly when most software is leaning towards Vista nowadays anyway (particularly Microsoft software). Just keep Vista, at least until Windows 7 comes out.

ummm OS X, lol.

My machine can handle vista with out a glimour of a problem in the hardware department, unfortunaltly, that's not the problem, vista's strange quirks, odd habits, and general willingness to do what i don't particularly want it to do puts me off. Atleast xp sort of worked.

Windows 7 does look promising though, looks like mac's increasing market share, is putting Microsoft back on it's toes.

I have lots of problems, crashing . Freezing , going slow, in vista if I try to open flash and photoshop at the same time it slows my of real bad but I have a high end gaming computer

When was the last time you reformatted the computer? Sometimes, a miniscule setting that's been changed or corrupted screws up your entire computer, and rather than just going through everything to find it, it's quicker to back everything up and reformat your machine. It's best to do this once a year anyway to make sure you have a piece of hardware that's running fine all the time. Another explanation is that a piece of your hardware is failing, are you hearing any peculiar noises, like beeps or what sounds like a fax machine?

 

So, get your external hard drive out and start backing up.

I don't understand why people keep bigging up XP over Vista for - it's nearly 8 years old and feature wise not as good as Vista. If you hate your PC crashing sell it and buy a Mac or use Linux instead... Windows will *NEVER* be bug-free or problem-free. All OSs have their faults even OS X, just some (Windows) are more prone to problems than others.

 

You also have to bear in mind that Windows (and Linux) is designed to work on more-or-less any PC system (as long as it's on a system which passes its minimum requirements obviously - so you can't go putting Vista on a 286 for example LOL), whereas OS X will only work on Apple boxes (officially) and so hardware and software work better on a Mac platform.

 

Windows 7 I've heard some good reports on but I can't say from personal experience as I've not beta tested it or anything.

I'd stick with Vista and wait to upgrade to 7.

 

I tested 7 for a while and it's very very nice, a few useful new features and tests have shown it runs quicker than XP.

At home - I had Vista Ultimate x64 on my computer for the past year but a month or two ago I installed Windows 7 and I've found it a lot better. I had a really good spec PC so didn't expect any performance difference but Windows 7 definitely runs better.

 

At work - I had Vista but I was having some problems with my Adobe CS4 Master Collection so last week I went back to XP x64 and it's great. If you can get over how dated it looks you're laughing.

 

Generally though, I do prefer Vista to XP and prefer Windows 7 over Vista -oh, and OSX over anything Microsoft

Everyone I know personally who has a Vista PC hates it. They cite slowness compared to XP, too many annoying modal permission dialogues, freezes, crashes, etc. And many of these people are engineers working for a Microsoft Gold Partner...

 

There are also loads of industry voices that trash Vista, and whenever I buy a PC I check it has the free XP "downgrade" DVD in the box.

 

Windows 7 is another matter. My girlfriend has the RC on her works laptop (a 2 year old HP) and it flies.

yup, plus vista has made things more difficult compared to xp, like ctrl+alt+del there's now an extra menu as opposed to going straight to the task manager, i and many people have taken up the habbit of just opening it from the run dialogue, but why make things harder to get to? It just seems a tad counter productive.

 

The fact that vista takes double the ram that xp uses to do nothing, is kind of lame, why? it's pointless, i'd much rather have the extra ram. I've got 8gb of ram, but vista takes up nearly 600mb to do nothing, leaving me with a smidgen over 7, tbh i'd much rather have the smidgen over 7 and a half, that little bit can make a difference.

 

But i have heard promising things about 7, so i look forward to that, i would of got the beta, but didn't want to risk not having a pc, after i got the longhorn beta, that was the biggest mistake i made.

I'm by no means supporting Vista (or Microsoft for that matter) but I think it got a pretty raw deal. Fair enough it wasn't that great but I reckon most of the people that moaned about it barely had the minimum spec to run it. Seriously, I've seen threads for the past few years where people are slating Vista and when it comes down to it they have a single core with a gig of RAM... fair enough this will run it but it's not gonna be great. My old PC had a Intel Core 2 Quad 3.2GHz, 4GB OZX Reaper RAM and a 768MB DDR3 8800GTX OC2 graphics card, it flew and I really had no problems at all. As I said previously, Windows 7 ran even better. People get mixed up with how much RAM a system uses when it's idle. The way Vista and Windows 7 work is much different to that of XP; at the end of the day memory IS there to be used and these OS utilise it better (this again comes down to PC spec).

 

Either way... I've had enough of PC's and luckily I've got an iMac at work as well. My next investment is a Macbook Pro -aaahhh OSX

In vista, to access the task manager directly, press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC

 

Vista is rubbish. XP is definitely better. W7 looks promising.

 

As of this weekend, Vista will be off of my computer, and I'll be back to a nice dual boot linux/XP (need the xp for games lol)

Learn summin new every day although it's spazzes out my task bar, and now i have a dialogue menu stuck, this has to be the most annoying thing in vista, that's a constant problem on all my pc's *sigh* see attatched. The little menu won't go away until i reboot, it just sticks on the top, this happens constantly.

 

Update: It's not just spazzed out my sidebar, it didn't actually open, although the icon is in the taskbar, with the green bar flashing up and down, and i can't remove/open/re-open it *sigh*

 

Off for another reboot.

 

Edit: i've added another screenshot for good measure, does anyone know how to get rid of the menu's when they do this? GAH :@

Why reboot? If you must do something, just log-off and on again lol

 

Either that, or just crash explorer, and reload it (although you'd need to access the task manager to do it )

Flaw in the plan, ctrl+shift+escape locked away the task manager, it's just flickering in my task bar >.< i can't access it though *sigh*

i am going to hook up a second pc, test xp and windows 7, i also have a macbook but useing windows for so long i find it hard to move to osx, i like the build quality of the mac, i just find that osx is slightly i dunno, it just doesnt feel wright.

I've actually taking a liking to Vista, its on my new laptop, hate the using the disk frag program though, I downloaded Auslogics Disk Frag instead, way faster and free
