how do I get favicons to work?

Featured Replies

hi peeps

I learnt from youtube how to convert your image to ico and code it into dreamweaver but the trouble is when I go to view in browser nothing appears at all and reading some of the the replies for that tutorial people have problems viewing it IE but fine in Firefox but I get sod all :(

I am putting this coding <link rel="short cut" href="image/favicon.ico" /> between my open and closing head tag and the image as 16 x 16 pixels as taught so I just wondered if anyone could shed any light on this topic in why it works in some broswers and not others if at all or just a better way of doing this

cheers and hear from you all soon

I have just tried to do this too and it works in FF but not IE.

I have put:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico">

<link rel="icon" type="image/gif" href="favicon.ico">

in my file between the head tags.

Also make sure your favicon.ico file is in the same directory (ie root) as the html page.

Hope this helps

Cheers guys for your help thats awesome!!!! :yahoo::good:

at least there 2 methods I know on how to do this properly now that actually work and the only thing I had to correct for my coding just incase someone else is new to alll this like me was changing the image file extension type="image/gif" to type="image/ico"

still strange why some browsers dont accept this but hey better to have some nice little icons than nothing at all :D

Now I do the favicon differently to this, I simply take a gif or Jpeg file and rename it favicon.ico and place it in the main directory of the site without any link within the HTML

Your favicon should be 16x16 -try resizing it and see if it works? If not, try this code instead of the one you have...

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />

I tried your suggestion to no avail. Really stumpt on this one!

Are you referring to your own site here? See screenshot...
