Help choosing a host!

Featured Replies

After looking around at some of the free webhosting available I have decided that it would be better to go for a paid host. I need the following to be available:

Easy to build site - Preferably with a sitebuilder that is really easy, i.e just typing in the text and uploading the photos I want.

Be able to support some kind of forum

Able to support either PHP & MySQL or ASP ( preferably all of them) as people have volunteered to help design some aspects. I haven't got a clue how to do any of them :(

Nice and cheap hosting ( I'm a mature student with 3 kids - I can't afford silly amounts)

Good support from host if needed.

I am currently looking at Justhost.com. Any comments or advice appreciated

Unlimited diskspace? Found many hard disks with no limit to space?

Hosts like this can very rarely offer you an form of decent service. Whilst cheap doesn't necessarily equal rubbish, I'd always be a bit wary of offers that seem "too good to be true". There is no such thing as unlimited space.

There are numerous hosts active on this forum, and I'm pretty sure some of them will be along shortly.

From reviews and the like, the favourites here-abouts seem to be:

csnewmedia

wesh

Peartree

clook

FlyHigh

Indeed, the unlimited's dont exist.

Best to stick with one or the other in terms of php or asp. PHP will be best if your on a budget as windows hosting is naturally slightly more expensive and you will often find yourself paying on a "per-database" basis with some host's if you want MS-SQL database's, whereas MySQL (php equivalent) is free so you will find you end up with bundled amounts of DB's rather than per-Database.

Best thing to do is take a look at those mentioned by Scott S and see which of us fits your budget and you feel more confident with. Do a google search for reviews too.

We now use ratepoint.com to manage our reviews independantly, which works quite well for us..

Our hosting does come with a website builder which must be fairly straight forward because one of my own friends has an account with us and he builds stone walls for a living so isnt really a techie and he managed his site without any help.

We also have an application auto-installer called "Fantastico" so you can easily install forums, galleries and tons of other such applications in just a few mouse clicks, and you can create seperate FTP accounts so that your friends can access your account to work on seperate area's of your website without giving them access to everything.

Does WESH have any templates for websites that can be used. As I say, I'm not exactly Bill Gates when it comes to computers :D

Doh! Just found the templates - looking good

personally, I'd always go with No-Wires, no matter what the situation, they're excellent hosts, with a no nonsense attitude and great customer support, follow the No-Wires link in my signature to view their deals.

Prices look good but don't seem to have templates or any kind of sitebuilder

Stay well clear of unlimited hosts, do a quick search for just host reviews and you will get the idea.

We offer a value plan which would suit you perfectly which is just £20 a year, or our monthly plan one up from that which is £3.49.

We offer php& mysql as requested and the easy to use RVSitebuilder. Along with fantastico deluxe for easy install of scripts (including forums).

With a no questions asked 14 day money back guarantee for all our shared packages.

THis certainly looks good and is cheaper than the others so far. Only question is are there are templates available for building my site as I cant see any there?

Our site builder comes with over 500 customisable templates, or you can create your own using the site builder.

Let me know if I can help at all.

You could always build it for me for free :D . Only joking! I'm quite looking forward to having a go!

Careful mate, comments like that will get you shot, stabbed, hung, drawn and then quartered on this forum!

But we're a friendly bunch really lol

We have the RVSiteBuilder Pro installed on our systems, It comes with a lot of templates and is very easy to use :)

I'd avoid JustHost as there is no such thing as unlimited :)
