Maybe someone out there can help me?

 

I'm having problems getting my wife's site ranked on Google:

 

www.madaboutfancydress.co.uk

 

People can find it ok if they are searching specifically (ie "Pope Costume" or "German Soldier Costume" etc) but using the general phrase of "fancy dress" it doesn't appear to be ranked at all. I've run some checks and can't find it ranked in the top 1000.

 

We've tried submitting all necessary meta keywords to EKM (the e-shop people we are using) etc and tried to match it up as much as possible but still no success.

 

Considering going down the Google Adwords route to see if that can help.

 

Has anyone got any other suggestions on what to do? (Please note the site is still a work in progress and I'm conscious that maybe I need to do more work on the front page).

 

Would really appreciate some advice (if nothing else it will get my wife off my back !)

You need link building for your site. I have one site given below for link exchnage.

meh @ link exchange. thats old school. you just need to be making links with the anchor text the keywords your targeting. maybe write some articles and stick some links in, and publish it on squidoo - oh and digg the squidoo page. just keep at it.

Still lots more to do then. You think you've done all the hard work in building a site - little do you know until afterwards that's just the tip of the iceberg lol.

If your current host will allow you or e-commerce software company allow you to install a blog then installing one is very important. E-commerce website tend to not get updated as much as a typical brochure website new seasons new stock then leave it for 6 months. Use a blog to get long tail keywords and promote your own products.

Yup, Andy is right.

 

Build lot's of (around 250) keyword rich backlinks from websites with at least a pagerank of 4 that are also related in some way to your own market.

 

For example, a link with the keyword phrase 'Fancy Dress' back to your website, from a fancy dress website with a pagerank of 3.

 

Build these links over time, roughly 4 months at around 1 to 2 links per day so that the link building process looks natural and organic to Googles algorithms.

 

Once complete you should start to see a vast improvement in the search engines while also getting other websites to link to you naturally.

 

It's very important that you perform keyword research as well, to discover the most profitable keywords for your niche.

 

You can use the free Google AdWords Keyword Tool to do this.

 

To check the rank of the website you wish to link from you can use the free Rank Checker tool at SEO Book.

 

It may be an idea to build a list of websites with PR4 or higher that you'd like to link to and contact each website to ask about a link exchange. Although link exchanges don't hold as much weight as one way links they do still contribute to your rankings.

 

A blog would be a good idea also, as would article marketing.

 

Article marketing is the single best way to build traffic and backlinks. Do some research on article marketing in Google to find out more.

EDIT: Also, social media marketing on Facebook, Twitter and sites like Digg will help tremendously when building traffic.

Looking at your website, there are a number of issues on the homepage that need working on. On top of that your biggest problem is link building, you have virtually no links to your website.

You’ve optimized those for “Pope Costume”, "German Soldier Costume. So, surfers are able to find your site. Try to optimize the keyword “fancy dress”. Build quality back links to the keyword you wish to be ranked for.

Having run your home page through a few analysers and having looked at the source code my suggestions would be;

 

There is no robots meta tag, I would also check your robots.txt file as it may be stopping the robots as I could not get one of the analysis tools to work

The meta description could be reduced to 150-200 characters

The meta keywords could be reduced to 8

Reduce the page title to 70 characters

Use separate css style sheets.

Create a blog.

Submit articles to digg.

Provide free information on the website for your site users together with an RSS feed.

Consider adding a News function which you update weekly highlighting special offers etc.

Rewrite the first 200 words to contain more keywords.

Check that the order in which the search engines see the webpage is header then main body, not header then left hand side menu then main body.
