I really, really want to do a graphics design, web design, web development related course, but i dont have time to goto a college. Anyone know of any good (and good value) online / home learning courses?

Do you not have time to do a two hour a week night course, a lot of colleges do them and they can be really helpful...plus they never cost that much. You would get the benefit of two hour a week tutorials where you can ask tutors all the questions you need to, get the course work and the qualification. After all if you can do a home learning course then you should have two hours to spare a week to go to a course....plus it is always better quality for the money you are paying (and they are cheaper )

I only say two hour a week as that was how many hours a week might night course was in web design, it could vary depending on colleges, but normally they aren't that many hours per week

try the open university. they usually have flexible courses and you don't have to worry about ending up with a qualification that's not worth the paper it's on.

Hi, did this course offer a qualification? Thats more the reason why I want to do it

While we're on the topic of qualification; do people out there ask to see academic qualifications?

 

I'd expect that if you apply for a job within a company they might be interested, but generally when you run your own business?

The course I did offered a qualification at the end. Best way to check that your local college does is phone and ask, as a lot of them do offer basic to advanced level night classes in a lot of subjects, so you might get lucky

 

 

Also a bit of advice be careful with home learning courses however as some of them do give you a qualification but it might not be a recognised one, so make sure you look into it

Make sure to check out the curriculum... to be honest, web technology moves so fast, it's hard for web design courses to keep up. The curriculum is set at the beginning of the year and then it's not updated til the next, and you know how much could've happened within that time!

 

Forums, buy yourself a few good books, tutorials and then make yourself a nice portfolio... a good pf speaks for itself

I've talked to people that's supposedly been taught webdesign. But most of them doesn't seem to know much about the underlying technologies they're using. Seems to be they where taught graphic design instead. Few knew about semantics, the importance of separating layout from content and didn't see or know the disadvantages of Flash. I'd be very critical to pick a webdesign course.

The thing with most courses is that if you want to learn something then you have to have a passion for it. It course is mainly there to motivate that little bit more, there is only so much that it can teach you and after all they are after a finished project at the end of it. If you have a passion for it then you have to also take your own lead, and read, research and keep up to date with things. If you just stick to the course and what the course teaches you without taking it further then yes you will simply get a basics of web design....after all you do a webdesign course you are going to be told about web design not so much the development side of it.

Although their site shows $, I'm certain they have one in other currencies as well.

Thanks for the tip. Its not really knowledge I am after, its more something to put on my CV, though I am sure I will learn something in the course I do get.
