My site so far

Featured Replies

My website is http://www.jusren.com.

^_^ The site is still undergoing content review. The aim of my site is to prepare and promote myself in the future as a web designer and hopefully developer (not sure if want to go that route yet?), as well as putting into action the things that I've learnt from both university and college.

Along the way, I've learnt a lot about web design and that it is something that almost resembles a tamagotchi as it requires maintenance and up keep (back in the day I use to just want a site and just leave it! )

Now web design is something that I'm serious about, I look forward to reading your reviews, critiques, tips, hints and suggestions (and whatever else constructive).

P.S,

A question that I would like to ask is that, if you navigate around my site, you should still notice that the page extensions still appear such as www.jusren.com/about.html or skills.html. Is there a way i can stop this from appearing and just having www.jusren.com/about or /skills.

I read that I had to create individual pages for each of my pages and store them in there each named index.html. I have tried this and linked to the page using <a href="http://www.jusren.com/about/index.html">blah</a> However the extension still appears, am i doing something wrong?

The site looks very 1990's.

I don't like the look of it, I think it could use a redesign.

I suggest you read up on design.

Here is an article I would recommend:

Meshach,

Thank you for replying and sharing your opinion. I will visit the link and read up on it and see how I can apply it to my web site.

Thank you for your feedback.

A little exercise.. can you talk us through this website? Like, what the concept is, how you chose those colours, how you developed the logo, why you made particular design decisions and so on?

Meshach,

Your quite welcome. Stick with it.

I would recomend a liter background (the one you have is too intricate).

Also text is not so good on such backgrounds, and images should be neater with maybe some thin borders built into the layout a bit more.

If the text was like it was on your blog and you had a smoother liter background it would be ok.

Hi Ren, I'm sorry no offence intended but I really dont like it, my main problems with the site are.

The JusRen logo looks like its supposed to be retro but doesnt tie in with the rest of the site, the image suggests slick corpratism (if thats a word lol) but the rest of the site is a mixed bag of retro themes. I would suggest picking which way you want your web identity to go, are you going for corprate clients or a younger more hip kind of client and if you want to appeal to both your site has to tread a very fine line so both parties can identify with your designs.

The background would be more tolerable if it was in small sections only visible beside your main content, so for example your site would be centered and be fairly plain where your text is sitting to allow for ease of reading, and then the background would just sit either side not interfering with your text.

The text is also a jumble of colour and style with no real direction, or purpose. I would suggest using one maybe 2 complimenting colours in your text and a max of 2 fonts one for headings and one for main content. you can still make your text interesting with things like dropcaps and a bold first paragraph etc. if you are stuck for colour inspiration try here

Also you are using the strict document type and your site is way off validation with 8 errors and 7 warnings. the transitional type is more forgiving. but if you want to use strict your code has to be tight.

Sorry to come over all Simon Cowell but I hope the critisism has been constructive.

I stand corrected, Thank you :D

Hi, sorry I'm not that keen; the thing I have the most problem with is your woman crouching in the middle...it is making me cringe!

I think you need more padding around your text etc too...but others have said more so I'll stop now.

A great book to inspire is The Principles of Beautiful Web Design - by Jason Beaird, if you fancy investing a bit in a book I think this might really help!

Ren,

I see that your getting alot of feedback about your site, which is good! This will allow other eyes to see your work and give you cerain tips and tricks. I saw that you asked about getting your pages to show up like /about or /contact or /whatever. Try this, create a folder and name it about. Then create an index.html file which will be for your about page. Now, when you link to it, be sure to link to it like this <a href="www.mysite.com/about">About</a>

Now, for the critism on your site. As T put it, you are using html 4 strict. I would highly use xhtml transitional when you make your pages. I feel this is better to use. I think someone mentioned it earler, but I think you need to do something with the colors of your site. Have you heard of Kuler? If not, go to http://kuler.adobe.com and check this out. You can get alot of color ideas that would possibly go together.

NOOO, you didn't do that. I see that your still using the old school method of formatting font colors. I would recommend using CSS for everything. However, I did see that you are using the header tags and such which is a good thing when it comes to SEO..

I mentioned CSS earlier, and I thought I would look at your CSS file. I would highly recommend you keep practicing with CSS. Also learn about using CSS shorthand. This will allow you to have a smaller CSS file. Just to touch on a couple of things in the CSS file I saw that should be changed are....

h1 {

color: #F0C23A;

font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman", Times, serif;

font-weight: bold;

padding-bottom: 0%;

font-size: 30px;

font-weight: bold;

font-style: italic;

}

The font weight is being repeated which is doesnt need to be. Just use it that one time and move on. I saw there were a couple others like this one, just thought you should know.

Other than that, just keep practicing and you will get better! Good Luck!

I forgot to mention, the picture is kinda off? This just doesnt go with the theme that you have going on?

I will stop critizing you, best of luck!

Dear Everyone,

Thank you all for taking the time to visit my site, reviewing it and replying and giving me such feedback be it good or bad (constructive) I will reply to each of your posts individually as soon as I get home.

I will continue to work on these all and re-submit another thread and inform you of the new layout.

Get back to you all soon,

jusRen

Not my style, but it's your own thing, so if you like it, leave it the way it is.

Issues I would address would be that the "ink blob crouching woman poster" is on a white background making it the center of attention and taking it away from things like the nav bar. I would replace it with a "cooler" (color-wise) image.

Also, the "skills" link, doesn't have an underline decoration as the others do. Now I'm not sure if that's what you meant, but it caught my attention. If you are going to change that then don't forget to add the same decoration for the hover state.

Cheers,

-Empek
