CMS options for wide range of functionality?

Featured Replies

I haven't worked much with CMSs - I tend to build most web apps from scratch, other than integrating the odd forum or setting up an online store.

However, what if I wanted a site to have:

a. an online store with secure checkout

b. a discussion forum

c. an image gallery (which could be part of the forum)

d. a series of custom informational pages

e. a blog

f. the ability to bolt on some custom functionality by writing my own code (e.g. a particular kind of competition or league)

and I absolutely, positively, had to have all this integrated so that users got access to everything with 1 login?

Is there a CMS out there that will do all that (possibly by adding various plugins I guess)?

Even better, is there an open source PHP-based CMS out there that will do all that?

There are several CMS's that should left you accomplish this - Joomla and Drupal spring to mind as well as Expression Engine - all 3 have fully open code so you can tweak to your hearts content.

Expression Engine isn't free for the kind of functionality I need...

Joomla doesn't have a good or stable enough online store plugin...

Drupal looks amazing. Fiendishly complex, but amazing, especially with the Ubercart add-on :)

I shall allocate a few hours a week to getting to know it. Thanks for the tip.

No worries :)

I'm just not accustomed to the words "open source" and "please pay here" on the same web page... seems a bit wierd somehow.

Try Wordpress. I know it's a blogging platform, but it can be extended to do everything you list above and best of all it's free.
