November 28, 200817 yr Does anybody know of a good way to view sites in IE without actually using IE? What I mean is, does anyone know of a plugin to Firefox or something other app available on Linux that will parse documents according to IE6's implementation of XHTML and CSS. Perhaps someone has built a "hacked" Gecko engine using the rules of IE6? Just so annoying to design a nice site which checks out with the W3C and then looking in IE6 (under IES4Linux) it is all over the place! Just a thought here which came to me. The EU decided in their wisdom that people had to supply weights etc for the selling of fruit and veg in metric and not imperial measurements. Why can't an organization like the EU spend its time on enforcing a standardisation of the 99% globally accepted W3C standards instead of my fruit and veg? Does anyone know if this is or has being looked into? I know that this will be of little issue in the future as IE7 is 70% of the way there and IE8 is on its way - but in the meantime I still get fed up having to recode my CSS just to satisfy a poor implementation of web standards. ...rant over!
November 28, 200817 yr IE6 is old and out of date, no need to support it. Anyone who is stupid enough to insist on using it doesn't deserve to see the web properly. IE7 causes problems (it still sucks) let alone IE6, I gave it up a long time ago, if it's valid and works in modern browsers, job done.
November 28, 200817 yr Something like an IE6 emulator? http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE Over 20% of current web users use IE6, so depending on your niche, it's best to bear them in mind!
November 28, 200817 yr you can try this one http://ipinfo.info/netrenderer/ don't try to support ie6, it is a piece of ...
November 28, 200817 yr Author I'd love to say that I can't be bothered with supporting IE6 but it is a sad fact of life that people are still using it. And its difficult trying to explain to clients why the site you just knocked up for 'em looks awful!! Thanks for the suggestions tho. The Multiple_IE thing would be great apart from one thing - I am so anti-MS that I don't even use Windows and have been happy not using Windows for a few years now! The NetRenderer is great - but was hoping to check out my JS against a browser too. Sigh - I'm sure MS do this on purpose you know!
November 28, 200817 yr I really don't think you can discount IE6, to say that users of it are not worth considering is very unprofessional. If you are making a site for a client then the fact that people still use IE6 is your problem not theirs. To be honest although IE6 is completely ridiculous in the way it reads CSS there is always a way to make it work, it just requires a bit of perseverance. If it's your own personal site then fine, do what you like, but for a professional to deliberately exclude 20% of web users is just plain ignorant.
November 29, 200817 yr Author Well I think its time to NOT support IE6 in my opinion. But I need to asses whether this is a wise choice. I found http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2008/November/browser.php which shows a 35% usage. Well I guess thats better than > 50%! Does anyboidy else know of any other good stats sites to properly asses this kind of thing?
November 29, 200817 yr Does anyboidy else know of any other good stats sites to properly asses this kind of thing? http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp they rate IE6 at 20% and IE7 at 26% Why would it be time to top supporting IE6 when at least 20% of people still use it? It's not up to designers to force people to upgrade.
November 29, 200817 yr Author Yeh - maybe a little hasty in my reply! I know there ways to work around it - just frustrating sometimes. Have been developing sites as a hobby for years and I am surprised at how the whole IE thing still stirs my blood after all this time! I saw the W3 schools stats but I think these could be skewed. I read somewhere that the stats may be disproportionate since the majority of users visiting the W3Schools site are web developers and so would possibly favour a better browser. (i.e. a standards based one!)
