I'm moving a clients site from one server to the other. I know that it might effect the rankings but if I move the domain along with it will the rank and position be effected?

logic would asume that as long as the content and domain stays the same the rank should not affected, unless your website is down when the spider would usualy come across it, that would be anoying

I believe there is a chance that by moving a site form one server to another your PR and/or SERP may be effected.

 

An example of this is that a slower server may effect crawls, there has been suggestion that this could be a minor contributory factor in SERP. Or if your proposed new server has more 'downtime'.

 

On SEOmoz I read something about sites held in the same server may effect yours...

 

In summary (and having no real depth of experience in this specific area) I 'think' that it could have some effect but I think it would be very minimal.

Can you have both servers running at the same time ?

 

If you have the site active on both the old and the new server, the 12-48 hours of domain propagation shouldn't bother anyone as both sites will be the same. Once you're satisfied the domain has fully propagated then you can remove the old site . . .

well the domain is really the big thing that's moving over. I have the files on a cd. My client had a company that didn't give him access. So he had to pay $150 to this scumbag to get his files. $150 for a freaking disc. Some people are real bums. Anyhow he already has a site setup and the host lets him host other sites off his account so that's what I'm going to do so there isn't really any downtime.

Yeh that's a common thing. I once worked for a company that wanted to charge £250, yes *£250* to allow somebody access to their site on a CD. Its disgusting really. I think its a ploy to try and retain customers or make it hard for them to leave.

 

In any case, I don't think you'll have any issues with switching server.

 

As your putting some time into moving it over there might be a few quick wins (SEO) that will only take minutes?
