if i want to make a portfolio does it have to have qualifications on it? i dont have any atm

 

which is why i asked in a previous topic, what did you guys do, did you create fake sites for fake companys, so possible clients can see what you can do, and if so how many should you do, i was htinking of building my protfolio but not putting it on the net untill i have made some fake sites to put on it, i think a range of fake sites, such as shoping, maybe gaming, motors just some genral stuff so people can see what you can do.

 

also i have another question. once i have built my portfolio and make "fake" websites, then what do i do? make more... or what lol.. i was thinking of build a free flash games website as a main project and do my portfolio and "fake" sites on the side. im sure by the time i have finished it will be about a year or so from now.

If you don't have any qualifications then you can't really show them on your site, plus its not important to have these on a site, as a lot of web designers are self taught.

 

Well once you are confident in building sites then you try and get people to want you to make sites for them. But I think maybe you should walk before you run, and cross that bridge once you have a good understanding of how to make a site using HTML and CSS

If you have formal qualifications then you could mention them if you wanted to

 

As for how much to show in your portfolio, how long's a peice of string? I'd suggest having at least half a dozen portfolio items (fake or not) so you can offer a potential client a variety of samples of your work. Essentially, fake sites are really just sample templates and you could use them (or parts of) in future design projects so the more you make the more assets you'll have.

Who do you see your 1st few clients being? accountants, bars, car dealers, estate agents? whoever you see i would recommend making similar sites, it will show you potential clients that you are experienced and make them think you understand their field better. Also if you make a shopping website, how about finding out if you can find a drop shipper? basically you have a site and take the money and orders and then the order goes to the drop shipper to dispatch the goods. it might make you some money, and wil give you real life experience of ecommerce.

Well its always good to keep working on your skills, but clients don't just fall into your lap, you will have to look for clients. So if your portfolio is to a good standard and you have done a lot of different styles of sites, to show you can do variety then you then you should look for clients...and if no one is interested, well cross that bridge when you get to it. As really you should just look at building up your knowledge of web design and development and get the portfolio together

I'm self tought, I made a few mock-ups and thatwhen starting, well I kidna started while i learned (if that makes sence)

 

Can you blag/sell?

Just stroll into places that don't have websites and giv them a bit of cheeky chappy..

or even if they do tell them you can give them a better one.. works for me!

 

One guy was advertising for someone to get big manufactures on there website, they didnt even want a web siteor anythign designing...

I told them they have no chance with a website like that told them why etc...

I ended up giving them a re-design, they was so happy with my services they asked me to do another website to expland there business selling different products then the first site...

 

I guess I'm trying to say is that if you can sell your self, give amazing designs and brilliant customer service, a lot of the time you'll get more then what you expected, aswell as a long term client.
