wow for a second there i thought u had designed it!

I dont know what you should say in your email but if u emailed me and you had no examples of your work.

I would prob look at my site think maybe it does need a redesign but call someone else.

This is what you're going to have to work hard to overcome. What I'd probably suggest is creating a very nice mockup (or working demo site if you've the time) and couple that with a well written piece about what the design is about, why it's important to them and the opportunities it will give them. If it's local then why not say "...and if you like all this then I'm local, let's arrange a meeting".

You could always do the redesign in exchange for a member's card or tickets or whatever they do - just to get your portfolio off the ground and still be able to say it was a real paid client?

Explain that the site as it stands does not do the company justice, go into some level of detail that having a good web presence is vital to any long-term marketing strategy and then tell them that their web site isn't working for them.

As this is your first project I'd be inclined to design for free, allow the client to look (a no risk concept) and if they are happy you will proceed. Also offer your expert SEO skills and build into the final cost all of your Keyword analysis and SEO related activity. You can also put on a Blog and CMS - (SME's love that!)

I also find that by reassuring you have an interest in making the product work (ie you won't dissapear overnight) - that helps as these are hard financial times and you may find that budgets for advertising (including Web / Email work) will be the first to go, if SME's will spend money they will need to make sure its spent wisely and in the right area!
