October 28, 200818 yr Hello all, I'm experimenting with some page layouts for site I'm doing for a friend of mine. I'm doing two versions of the site, one with tables and one with DIVs. Both versions of the site are giving me problems in Internet Explorer, and this question is about the tables version. I do know that people now think that using tables is silly anyway, but I want to see if there's a way of making this work. http://www.pureandapplied.org/richardconlon/home2.html (Please ignore the pages this links to). The page looks as I want it in a variety of browsers (I've used browsershots.org to check): Sea Monkey Navigator 9 Minefield Firefox But in MSIE the middle column of my table is nastily narrow: MSIE 8.0 MSIE 7.0 I know MSIE is prone to bad behaviour, -- is it me doing something wrong? What should I do to make this work (As I said I'm also trying a DIV version, but I'd like to work out what is happening here too.) Thanks Dave
October 29, 200818 yr Check your table cell widths, I only took a quick look but the bottom row doesn't look right.
October 29, 200818 yr Author Hello - Re MSIE 8.0 I'm not actually supporting it, but the problem occurs in 7 as well - there's no difference to how the page looks in 7 and 8. Dave
October 29, 200818 yr Author Hi Check your table cell widths, I only took a quick look but the bottom row doesn't look right. I'll go and do just that, and I'll come back and report. In the meantime - just to let you know, I'm in Northampton too (well just outside it) and I'm actually a musician first and foremost Dave
October 29, 200818 yr Author Hello! Check your table cell widths, I only took a quick look but the bottom row doesn't look right. Thank you - that worked. Just in case anyone as clumsy as me follows this, I think what went wrong was.... I created my original layout by slicing up a Photoshop image. This resulted in lots of merged and split cells. I added a bottom row and merged the 7 or 8 horizontal cells together to make one. I then decided to simplify the cells above, and replaced the patchwork by merging. This gave me one simple row of cells for content. Somewhere in this process the cell width for that bottom row I added must have got confused. The result worked fine in most browsers... but not MSIE. So thanks to Bluedreamer I deleted that bottom row, added in a new row, merged the cells horizontally, and hey presto. As always with even the simplest of mistakes it's difficult to know exactly went wrong without watching all the mouse clicks, but thanks for spotting how to put it right. I'm going to finish of the table based site and then see if I can get anywhere with the DIV based site... doubtless I'll be back! Dave
