Website Content Advice

Featured Replies

sorry if i'm posting in the wrong place.

I have had problems with clients about the contents of their website. In the middle of the project, sometimes they expect me to provide some write-ups on the contents of their website.

English is a second language in my country, and sometimes clients would suddenly ask me to write something up.

Do you straight away suggest to them a copywriter, or you would charge extra for the write-ups before any contracts are made? It sometimes create a problem (more of a hassle) when i had to do some research on their business area and spend time on the write-ups instead of them.

Any ideas on how to tackle this problem? Thanks in advance.

Ideally your contract with your client would outline what's expected of you. So if the client suddenly asks for something else you could point back to the contract and say that it was not part of the first outlined tasks and extra charges would occur unless they want to get a professional copywriter.

Writing quality content is a skill and it also takes time.

If the client is not giving you the text and expect you to write it its going to seriously increase the time spent on the job. This has to be made clear at the start to protect you.

As for the language issue...if your site is directed primarily at English speakers it must be very difficult for you.

I think you could spend a lifetime in the classroom learning the rules and then speak to an English person who breaks all of them in the first sentence.

Your best bet is to find an English person to proof everything. I have seen some really funny mistakes. I know what the meant to say but somehow it all goes wrong...

I don't write content for anyones websites. Why? I'm not in their line of business, therefore I lack knowledge needed to write effective copy.

I'm always using a copywriter.

You can find a good, dedicated freelance copywriter who will write the content for you for much less than you would expect.

Spend one day searching the internet and get in touch with some copywriters - this way you will have contact for future projects if you need.

On the other hand - if customer asks you for a copywrite - you should certainly charge him/her for this.

Copywriting isn't easy and some customers don't seem to appreciate this skill.

The true is - if you have a rubbish content - no one is going to take you seriously - one of those mistakes many customers tend to do - save on copywrite.

Good luck!
