Hi Ray

Since I've just requested feedback for my own site - I thought I'd attend to the Golden Rule and help someone else

Tested on iMac, Firefox 3

The first two things I noticed were:

1 - The size of the font is tiny and almost hard to read.

2 - If you are thinking about getting some rankings on Google you need to provide alternative content for the flash. You've done this to a certain extent but it will be better if you just paste all the content into the html div 'content'

I then noticed

3 - In your code you have a meta keywords tag in totally the wrong place - it should be within <head> and </head>.

4 - The scroll arrows are a bit too small and they should be enabled when the mouse rolls over rather than on click (more usable this way)

5 - The navigation text is a bit too small again

6 - You might want to consider making a 'pitch' on the front page rather than going straight into your background; it's not immediately obvious what you do.

7 - Navigating further through your site I once again feel that everything is a bit too fiddly to navigate around; mainly because everything is too small. Make your links bigger so it captures the mouse (so you don't have to be amazingly accurate with the mouse pointer). This may be to do with viewing on my imac, so will be interesting to see what other people say. If I zoom in a couple of levels its ok.

I think if you improve the navigation for those with high res monitors, you'll have a nice informative site with simple but working visuals that does exactly what it needs to do.

I'm sure that some people will wonder why you've chosen to do the site in flash anyway, rather than straight html

My first site, let me know what you think thanks

Thanks for your feedback much appreciated

My Name's Martin BTW i tried to make Ray Landon into a link but couldn't work out how (i can see how that was confusing)

I think your right about the the size of the font. I may have made the boarder too small for the content. i will also try enlarging the Nav bar. Thanks for the info on the Meta tags and alternative content. I love using flash but am new to web design and the more i read people comments in these forums I realize that its just not the most practical approach most of the time.

hello Martin

I agree I think the font is very small but the lay out is fine. I would like to see it when the font is bigger and i t hink that will make a big difference

I think that's for a flash site its very good because i am not real a big fan of flash. The layout and the design is fine.

Hope that helps

Changed the size of the Nav and text on first page, Do you think its necessary to change the size of all the text and links on the gallery page? (think i know the answer)

I agree with the points above but I would also like to point out the noise it makes when hovering over the links in the menu. It sounds like Star Trek and something that's not meant to be put on an art website.

Also not a big fan of splash pages and they have no meaning whatsoever. Building suspense? I doubt it. :pp

Your right about the sound effects taken them off, I didn't understand your comment about a 'splash page' did you mean a front page?

Made a few changes to the size of the text and links,

Please let me know if anyone thinks there is anything is anything else that could be improved

thanks

Martin

A lot better m8 what do you think?

Yeah I agree am very pleased with it now. Just gonna make the details a tad smaller on the gallery page and i can call it complete!

Thanks again for your quick comments

Martin

I like the design, but I really don't like the text.

It's too small and the letters are too close together it makes me go cross eyed!

Squishing letters up like that really isn't nice, same on your links.

I have to say, in this one case, I can see the purpose of the front page although perhaps add the menu onto the bottom of the image in the form of text links like: About | Exhibitions | Gallery | Contact so that people can jump straight to the section they want to??

Your right, just when i thought it was complete! I will experiment with some new fonts and send you a link

Much better now the sound is taken out. :) The splash page is the first page that you come to when you go onto it. The holding page if you understand me. The bit where it says enter. It's hold no purpose whatsoever.

I like the overall look and feel of this site - very appropriate to the subject. What I would do, as mentioned earlier, is put some copy on the 'splash' page to introduce the artist - just a paragraph to whet the appetite and reassure people they've come to the right site (and put the menu in like Eris said) - that way it shows some work but also serves other purposes.

For the main copy in the about page - got to agree it reads like a teenage CV and not a commercial artist. Better to combine evocative language that describes what drives the artist. It's also very 'blocky' and needs breaking-up a bit or it won't get read.

On the design, the text is still a wee bit small and needs a tad more line-spacing to aid readability.

Throughout the site, in terms of the copy, I think there should be some more personal touches - maybe short quotes from the artist and simple things like a "please be patient" while the gallery loads and something more appealing on the contact page to get a response.

Design-wise, just some little touches to consider... try indenting the 'Ray Landon' the same amount as the menu (it's up against the page container at the moment) and put some sort of divider between exhibitions and make each exhibition name and/or date a bit more prominent.

Just some thoughts - it's a nice design, just in need of some final tweaks IMHO. :D

Gotta disagree with Wize here, I see a lot of art sites and handouts and pamphlets - Lady Headcoats a bit of an art buff in her spare time, gallery openings, jetting off to edinburgh etc and for me this is written in a fairly standard way. It's about introducing the artist as a person and there technique etc not branding. So for me fit for purpose...Wize did you read all the about or are your comments based on the first paragraph?

Think you may want to play a bit with word and line spacing though....but small fonts are somewhat vogue on 'arty' sites.

:flm7:

I thought it looked very good, including the text size. Although you might wanna check out the email link on the contact page as it opens up with "undefined" in the subject and in the main content of the email, (At least in Outlook express anyway).

You could also change the hotmail to a normal email as you have a domain name.

It's all good! I didn't mean a corporate branding exercise but it's the waffle that sells art and gets art noticed by critics - very few successful artists happen to be the 'best' artists - today's art sadly is all about selling a 'brand'. If someone didn't create a 'brand' and come up with some waffle no-one would ever buy and unmade bed, a pickled cow or some pictures of Cambells Soup cans. What's also in vogue at the moment are 'stories' where you can introduce the artist on a very personal and engaging level. Art is primarily a marketing business persuading people that what they're buying will hold or increase its value.

Oh, and I have to admit to only skim reading after the first paragraph - but that's kind of my point... if I did then lots of visitors would!

But as always, listen to Headcoat's reality check and don't go down the road of bland corporate waffle, keep it real but just bear in mind that, like most websites, it's about selling not art. :D

Made some of the changes you guys recommended, if anyone wants to have a look. I just want to thank everyone for spending the time and effort to look through this site, the advice has been great!

One last thing.....

I have no experience with SEO can some please have a look at the source and tell me if this web site will get any rankings? I have added it to google and a directory but not sure what else to do.

Thanks again to everyone

Martin
