What constitutes experience?
Hi Tobo, I'm doing the Master CIW course which consists of CIW Foundations, Site Designer and E-commerce. I'm on the last section now. Its been fairly helpful in giving me an introduction to web technologies and theory, very little practical though. I have studied CSS more as this is not covered in great depth. That is one critism I have, the material is a bit dated. But as technology changes quickly in this industry, keeping course material updated is difficult. How are you finding it?

What constitutes experience?
Oh no . . . forced to take money!! The more I learn about web design the more I can see why people are so passionate about it. I am using the course I'm doing to give me a foundation on which to build. I still have so much to learn but one step at a time as they say! Thanks for your reply, its cleared up some of the things going round in my head.

Hi everyone
Just a wee post to say, well . . . Hi. I joined in November last year but haven't been very active since. Reason being that I have been ploughing through a CIW course I enrolled on (which has been tedious and frustrating at times!) but hey its nearly finished. I am now putting the theory I have learned from the course and further study into practice and have nearly completed my first site. I will post it for your critique when it is live (be nice its my first!!). I will no doubt be posting more now that I have actually started to develop sites. Until next time . . .

What constitutes experience?
Hi all, This has been on my my mind for some time. I am studying a webmaster course (a distance learning job) and have nearly completed my first site for an artist at work. I have a few other small local businesses looking for sites too, which I will be taking on soon. I have a full time position in DTP at the moment but it just doesn't challenge me enough, wrong eduncational decisions in the past have led me to this role. Hence the decision to change my career path to web design. I have financial comittments so going freelance full time is a bit risky, but I am more than willing to work in my free time to hone my skills and hopefully earn a little bit of extra coin too! My question is this . . . does creating sites in your spare time consititute experience that employers are looking for? Or is it usually agency experience that graduates gained whilst on placements through uni etc? Thanks in advance for any replies. Cheers

First Site design mock-ups
Thanks for the feedback, I don't want to make the site to overly complex as it is my first attempt at coding a live site. I've had plenty practice on tutorials and following books. NOw trying to put the theory into practice! One little thing I don't understand, with regards to the logo image. What white edges are you talking about? Cheers

First Site design mock-ups
Thanks for you opinions. My reasoning for the site being plain and simple is not to distract from the artists work. He uses traditional media therefore the colours i have picked compliment the colours he uses. I may be of the mark. I thought the links would need more work! Could you explain why making buttons would be tricky in the location they are? I'm new to this so any help is great.

First Site design mock-ups
Hi folks, I have attached a couple of J-pegs of a site I'm designing for a coleague at work. He is a portrait artist. His current site is http://www.portraitsbytosh.co.uk. Could you give me some feedback on the new design please. I have kept the structure of the site simple and picked subdued natural looking colours as not to distract from the main focus of the site, his work. I have created a Flash header for the home page only, he requested this to show his method of changing photos into hand drawn portraits. He also requested a lightbox effect for the gallery pages. As this is my first site I'm a bit confused as to what div tags I'll need to get started on the CSS. Any help and feedback will be greatly appreciated. Cheers Russell

Planning my first site
Hi guys, I am about to commence my project, wish me luck! The site is for an artist I work with, he wants his site re-designed as he feels his current one looks a bit bland at the moment, here is the link http://www.portraitsbytosh.co.uk/. I am fairly confident I can design a site layout that will look more professional and attractive, however there are a few questions I have with regards to coding. As this is a gallery site, should I stick with a fixed width layout as the current one is? He would like a lightbox effect incorporated, is this hard to implement? What screen resolution should I design for? Any help would be great!! Loads of questions flying around my head, just don't know where to begin! Thanks in advance. P.S. I may post some Jpegs of site mock ups for crit, hope you can help there aswell.
