morgano reacted to traxor in Urgent HelpI think it's a bit suspicious to have a folder called 'suspicious' on your account, so I'd go through everything and delete it if I were you!

morgano reacted to skidz in Legality of commenting on peopleHello People
I've been racking my brain for sometime now for a worthwhile project that will generate some revenue via advertising.
I'm not going to go into details (Top secret ). But basically my idea involves people basically commenting on other people.
How Liable would I be if somebody made a comment on somebody else, and the said somebody else wanted to go legal...
Basically can I get in trouble if I let people totally take the p*** out of somebody on my website?

From being active in the last couple of days i've picked up on the fact that a lot of designers are taking on coding work. But the fact of the matter is they cant code. So they automatically hit the "server side forum" or the "how do i do that" forum.
Im finding it continually frustrating that designers who can't code are taking the work from the coders. I'm a coder and can't design so I don't bother looking at design work offers.
Something else that is really starting to **** me off is the amount of people looking for web design / development for free, Even if the point of the site is to directly make the site owner money.
Its like me going into Tesco and saying can I have this pack of crisps for free so I can go and sell them to somebody else to make 100% profit.
Rant over... Just wondered if anybody else has an opinion on said matter.

morgano reacted to terydinho in Job InterviewI wouldn't be too worried about it - just bring up the salary issue at the second interview and if they avoid the subject then just say to them that you are not willing to continue with the interview until a salary has been discussed. That is just me though, I am very direct lol
It is perfectly normal for a company to get interviewees to complete a task for interview number two and if you do a good job on it then you can haggle your price a bit
To be honest, you should just do the interview, and if they offer you the job, then amazing and you can discuss money then, if they don't offer you the job then you've only lost a couple of hours of your time
There is actually no better feeling than turning down a job... it sounds odd I know... but I turned a job down about a month ago because the money wasn't enough and they called me up twice to offer me a better deal (still wasn't anywhere near enough) and it just made me feel really important haha - it is a nice feeling to be chased

morgano reacted to morgano in Job InterviewGiving a task such as designing a logo or page is normal. Not revealing the salary is a bit unusual, I'd be wary that they haven't announced it because it's actually pretty low.
Edit:
On seconds thoughts they might be determining the salary based on your experience and don't want to state a specific starting salary. Although in this case they normally state a range like £20-25k based on experience.

morgano reacted to taylor223 in how to make a site look pro?Practice and a lot of patience! Apart from that there are all kinds of things to consider, and I’m no expert.
Speaking as a beginner, taking a look at the relevant competition is always a good start for me. And get yourself Photoshop if you can, it's the nuts.
Being a long-suffering web surfer more than developer, its clean lines and concise content with the right amount of well produced graphics and a good colour scheme that I generally look for. The site has to work well and have a good navigation system, navigation is key in my eyes.
When it comes to layout there's all kinds of ways you can do it. From my experience there tends to be some 'best practice' type guidelines I try to stick to.
Site/company logo in top left above everything else
tagline introducing people to what the site/company is and can offer (nothing too wordy). Relevant pics work well.
A search box near the top
A well thought-out navigation system with clearly defined hierarchy (sections>sub-sections>etc). Tabs are a tried and tested method and work really well.
Clean graphics, they don't have to be web 2.0 super shiny and colourful, just clean.
A colour scheme that’s works with the type of content and target audience. I like using a triad scheme.
Nothing too fancy like flash etc unless absolutely necessary
Keep it easy to use and obvious what does what
And I never thought I would say this but adverts. They don't have to be external ads but rather ad style graphics promoting things within the site that people may be interested in. It kind of gives a feeling of the site being established and 'in use'.
Of course, this is just my opinion and it depends largely on the type of site, content and audience you would be designing for.

Just thought it deserved a hearty 'well done'

morgano got a reaction from Mikec1uk in PHP remember seen dataYou'll need a seperate table we'll call it "used_codes" this is our link table to link users and the codes they've viewed.
The table will consist of:
used_code_id (unique id)
used_code_user_id (user id - this is the id of the user that used the code)
used_code_code_id (code_id - this is the id of the code used)
This table could become quite big but it's relatively simple. You will definitely want to add indexes on used_code_user_id and used_code_code_id to speed up queries.
Everytime a user ticks off a code we'll need to add this data to the table. You'll also need to lookup each code against this table to find out if it's been used by the user or not..
This is the fastest method for what you need to do.

morgano reacted to T_break in Legal Advice Neededsounds like he is bluffing and just trying to scare a reaction out of you, dont give in, if you are confident you have met your side of the bargain you could use Money claim online its the online arm of the court service, you dont need to be a business anyone can use it, it cost £25 to make your claim but you do get that back along with the money the client owes, you also have the option of adding interest.
I have used this service once and it scared the living daylights out of the recipient and they paid by return post, nothing puts the s@@ts up people quite like recieving a payment order from the courts. my claim was pretty straight forward and the recipient didnt have any grounds to disagree with the order, but they do have a right to reply and or appeal so bare that in mind, it is a hell of a lot cheaper than using a solicitor and the action is usually pretty instant the person that owed me money recieved the court papers the following day.

morgano reacted to Peartree in Peartree V3Hi Guys,
Have just this minute finished the Peartree v3 layouts and was wondering your opinions on each
http://www.peartreeuk.com - Nothing much has changed here - only the content (thanks Wizely) and the navigation still a big improvement me thinks.
http://hosting.peartreeuk.com - Totally new look... I wanted to differentiate between the two sites because some users got a tad confused over which site they were on... I also think it looks much more professional
My special thanks goes to our own Chris who did the main site and John (Wizely) for doing the main site content

morgano reacted to Cabbage in GraduationWell I've just got back from graduation, not really much point to this thread other than to brag about an amazing day. I looked the dogs ******* in all the gown, and I had a full suit on underneath which made me feel a million dollars. Apparently I carried the gown best out of everybody there (told by several lecturers, my friends, parents and people I know). Had a really good day, got photographed, spent some time walking around the gardens where it was at and went to the actual ceremony. My course only had 2 people there graduating, they called out the course title to a deathly silence, then my classmates name to another deathly silence, then they said my name and my family made a huge noise and all my friends graduating made a racket too.
Throwing my hat in the air and catching it again has to be the most memorable and satisfying thing I've ever done in my life.
As I said, not much point to this post other than bragging rights really but I had an incredible day! Job interview on Monday now, bit apprehensive but I've got a weekend with my girlfriend in Notthingham before then .
