  2. Hello folks, I need some help and was wondering if people could offer their input. I'm inexperienced with web design and know only basic HTML and CSS. I want to make a website that's a directory for books that people can rate and give it a rating out of 10 which is then averaged out. The homepage i want it to have the latest books people have rated etc. What are my options on setting something Like this up? I have bought a domain and web hosting and unsure whether WordPress would be sufficient for this? What are my options? Amy advice would be helpful! Meph
  3. I have a n00b question if i may! Im keen to understand some aspects of this website if anyone may be able to answer my questions on it: www.500px.com Its a photography website that users contribute photography for and its something I have an interest in. I was wondering what this website was created using? Also how difficult would you say it would be to design a website like that where I can have people upload digital photography? It has the ability for users to create their own account and upload photography which others could then purchase through transactions and comment on as well as rate. Im wondering if this website would be particularly difficult or complicated to create? Also what is it built using?
  4. I use to work in business banking for HSBC and my advice is dont get one if you can help it. Customers who have business bank accounts get charged for pretty much everything that we take for granted with free bank accounts. I think you can keep your current bank account as a sole-trader as we had plenty of those. I suspect its barclays way of making money out of you by forcing you to change. My advice is stick to the normal personal account and separate your incomes by putting them into different savings accounts accordingly. You only really need one when your turnover starts to get huge really and it may start to attract attention from the tax-man.

  6. Hey Mate, Firstly thank you for taking the time to reply. I suppose I will try fumble my way through the various tutorials and perhaps some of it will stick! No doubt I will be nagging people left, right and center here at some point! My apologies in advance! Meph
  7. Hey Folks, My names Meph and im new to the forum and the world of web development. I work in the public protection field currently (Probation). I have always been a bit of a geek with computers and would say most my knowledge is hardware based but I decided a couple months ago that I really want to learn to make websites and get into web development. My main reason for this is I have numerous business ideas and experiments I would love to try and I think web development is a key area in reaching the widest market available. Unfortunately I don't have countless amounts of money to throw at paying an experienced developer to work on my crazy ideas so I figured its likely best if I become independent and learn myself. I figure it would open my doors into another field anyways from where I work so I suppose It will just give me a broader skill-set really which is great too. I have been working my way through the early lessons on CodeAcademy and am just about to finish learning Basic HTML which I seem to pick up well enough. Il be moving onto CSS too. I have bought this book by Jon Duckett to help me keep practicing once I have finished too: http://www.amazon.com/HTML-CSS-Design-Build-Websites/dp/1118008189/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1378936572&sr=1-2&keywords=jon+ducket It had good reviews so thought may as well; It looks quite interesting looking inside it and hopefully it will help consoildate my learning despite it being only for beginners. Il move onto it once I finish with Code academy. Im currently doing a little bit everyday on the website. I had a question too I was hoping you nice folks could help with really; Is there any tutorial sites that help work you through actually building a complex website start to finish or possible work projects or tutorials for more complex stuff I can move onto? but through a step-by-step process? A lot of the tutorials teach you the basics in their own individualistic way but I would like to start building stuff that allows me to put it all together through a step by step process rather than use my imagination and creativity as im still a bit unsteady in doing this myself. I hope some kind folks on here will be able to help me on my journey and perhaps direct me in the right path as I stumble along! Oh and its nice to be here too! -Meph
