New Personal website review...please!
Cheers throzen. I have probably spent more time on coding as it was completley alien to me a few months ago, I normally mock up designs on photoshop then use that as my reference when coding. The boxes looked fine on my machine and i cant figure out why they have gone misaligned on other computers. Im gonna go through my code again to try and figure out what the problem is. The multi coloured nav was originally going to be white then coloured on hover over but for some reason i decided to listen to my missus lol. I can change the banner at the top no probs and i think ill probably just go for a plain white background and choose a more universal font as when i looked on a friends computer BankGothic didnt show up. I think the reason i went for mainly images rather than text content is because im not very good at writing content and images was an easier option. The reason im trying to learn so much stuff at once is because in the last few weeks ive had requests for building plans / 3d model, designing a 3d model for a bouncy castle company, business cards, logos etc..........the list goes on.........as i said before im trying to cover all bases but maybe trying too much at once....ill get there in the end im sure as when it comes to learning software im normally pretty good!! Ill keep playing about with it for sure and thanks for all the advice. Once ive made the changes ill re post!!! Cheers Russ

New Personal website review...please!
i think maybe im trying to learn too much too quick, as well as the coding side of things im still trying to learn photoshop, im sharpening my autocad skills, still keep trying with sketchup and also now learning 3ds max. I think im trying to learn all the practical stuff quickly because i need to get some work and forgetting the simple stuff. Perhaps i need to stop trying to cover all bases.....and i think i definatley need to try n find a mentor and/or someone to guide me in the right direction. Ill get there im sure!!

New Personal website review...please!
after looking at my site at a friends house all points are valid........back to the drawing board.......the homepage squares are supposed to be lined up like the contact page, i use dreamweaver as a code editor so it automatically sets up transitional......... got a whole lot of work to do tomorrow......looked good on my computer but i gotta learn to accomodate for everyone...still learning and i hand coded all but the photogallery so im making progress..... but i post on here for good feedback and i get that every time.....it was still better than my last personal page attempt.....this is why i need to get an internship so i can progress my learning, this course im doing is well outdated and im learning more off my own back......cheers dap much appreciated!!

Getting a job in this industry....
Thanks for all the advice everyone. Ill keep on trying. As im learning my work should only get better and better so hopefully one day ill have that killer project under my belt that will help raise my profile. In the mean time ill keep applying. Pretty much every company i have contacted i have said that i would work for free just to get me that experience. Ill just get some more work in my portfoilio and then fingers crossed!!

Getting a job in this industry....
Ive done a couple of jobs for friends and also bid for quite a few jobs on people per hour, not actually won any yet though. I think on average im probably applying to 15-20 companies for junior roles per week, but they still look for people with experience (not quiet sure how they can justify that?). I already had quite a good design skillset before i embarked on webdesign ie Autocad, Autocad Inventor, Google Sketchup and Photoshop but no one will touch me with a barge pole with no relevant experience. Its just a bit frustrating, Im sure ill get there once day, but 'one day' dont pay the bills!!

Getting a job in this industry....
I know im fairly new to this industry after being a builder most of my working life, I have worked my ass off in the last 5 or 6 months learning web and graphic design from the ground up, and i think i have done quite well so far and learnt a hell of a lot of stuff. But its quite disheartening when i have sent out probably 200-300 emails to companies just to try and get an unpaid internship, when i dont get any sort of response at all. (Probably 3 replies) Ok im 33, im not a young college leaver, but jeez...how hard is it to catch a break. I thought id change career to do something i love, and make a better life financially for me and my family but im starting to think ill never get that chance. How long did it take people on here to finally break into this industry? And does anyone have any thoughts on what i could be doing wrong? I really dont want to have to go back to building!! Cheers!

1st Site in the bag....almost
I quite like the headings personally, Ill ask my mate who the site is for if they would like to suggest anything. I sorted the background out by mirroring it, i think it looks ok. I have just started designing a site for myself and could do with some constructive criticism on the design thus far. I personally quite like it

dap....you are a legend!! That looks so much better, how did you get the background image like that? Did you have to mess about with it in photoshop? I already have a replacement to the 'Welcome to Diverse....' banner sorted which im going to add in. Im thinking about maybe making the nav text a bit more fancy, maybe buttons perhaps? You have given me a lot of really helpful info and ideas which i will definatly implement, even the small details like font choice. I guess that's the difference between a novice and an experienced designer......fingers crossed ill get there myself one day!! Much love for the assistance!!

1st Site in the bag....almost
i do prefer that font for sure, i might have to alter the background image with the scroll work and also the content image with the gradient as when it repeats it dont look too good. Ill have a mess about with the images at some point today

Ill deffo try out all you have suggested. the things you have mentioned will no doubt make the whole site better. I am still studying and havent quite got to the php side of things yet. But its something ill look into in the future for sure I think that base.css was from the carousel i used as its one i found online. I have been using dreamweaver as a text editor and i think that puts it as transitional as default so ill change that as well. Ill have a mess around with the site files i have on my laptop and let you know how it looks Again thanks alot for the advice, its much appreciated!!

1st Site in the bag....almost
"the space at the very top of the site is too tight - either remove it or make it around 25px" - i was trying to get rid of it completely but couldnt figure out how to do it!! "really avoid using tables for anything that's not tabular data: make yor nav with a list (it is a list of links afterall)" - again i was trying to do it as a list but couldnt get it to look right, so i figured a table would be the easier option. Any assistance to these issues would be greatly appreciated Cheers Russ

1st Site in the bag....almost
Thanks for all the advice! Im going to take it all on board and make a few tweaks. Luckily the customer is a friend of mine so i can make all the changes etc with no worries. Im still waiting on content hence why the terms & conditions etc dont work properly yet. I put it online with only the first few pages working so people could see the work they have done and get in touch with them if needs be. Ill be having a mess about with it this week and ill post any changes i have made once i have done them. Again thanks for the advice, as a novice the tips and changes you have given me are really valuable to me!! I love this forum Russ

From being a complete novice a couple of months ago, i have finally got a site online. Apart from waiting for a bit of content to finish it, its done. The customers very happy with it but any feedback would be greatly welcomed. Cheers www.diversegiftcreations.co.uk

Digitizing a logo?
It did save alot of time, have done a few variations since then, the customer was adamant he wanted the design exactly as it was, but ive had to do a few color variations. All good practice though!
