    Check out https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights it's a great tool that tells you how fast your site is as well as some improvements that can be made, as speed is definitely a factor in site rankings. In terms of SEO methods, the usual work great, blog comments, forum signatures, social bookmarking and networking sites(reddit/facebook), question/answer sites(yahoo answers) and really anywhere there's users that you can expose your site on(though i'd stay away from shady places personally).
