  1. That's cool - CSS is freaky when you're first getting into it. I'll be in touch as soon as I can..
  2. Hi Nana, had a look at your code - your content div is being rendered lower down in firefox than in explorer, but I guess you already know that. The main problem here is that you've made everything a lot more complicated than it has to be. The layout is fairly simple, but you've used so many divs and mixed up inline and external styles that something would inevitably go wrong. You just need to try and simplify it down, you shouldn't need many divs to get this layout right, and once you do that the problem will become apparent or disappear. It'll take a while to go through all your code and it could do with a bit of a rewrite, but if you want I'll have a go at it sometime this week. Best of luck
  3. Is it from Jabberwocky? It reminds me of Jabberwocky. Best avatar I've seen yet
  4. That's not the only way (although it's probably as good as any other). There are always hacks for specific problems too (eg, ie6 won't let you have a div shorter than the size of your text, even if it's empty, but you can get round this by putting an empty comment tag inside the div <!-- -->). The box model hack is one of the most famous and is well documented on google. Whatever's happening, it's always worth having a search, usually someone's already had the same problem as you and has put a solution on the web somewhere. Hope that helps some
  5. Yeah that's usually it - and it goes so spectacularly wrong too .. Also slapping borders on everything, that always helps
  6. Wow Elanman, you're my hero! That works great, thankyou so much
  7. No problem Hope it all goes well!
  8. Brilliant - Thankyou! I'll let you know how I get on..
  9. Hi there, Is there a reason for the extra semi-colon after each closing curly bracket? If you take them away your other divs become visible. I don't know if that was what you meant? Good luck anyhow Kirsty
  10. Hi guys, was wondering if anyone knows an image replacement technique that works on links? This is the code I've been using until now but it only works on headings ... {height: 0px !important; height /**/: 40px; padding-top: 40px; background-image: url('example.gif'); background-repeat: no-repeat; overflow: hidden;} I've tried using buttons sometimes, but I don't know if that's not bad SEO, and I've tried using pictures in the HTML, but this time I need there to be rollovers so don't think I can do that ('cept with javascript and then it won't validate ...). Does anyone have any bright ideas? This has been bugging me for weeks now Many thanks, Kirsty
  11. Ooh nice one! Cheers
  12. Hi everyone, someone's sent me a docx (grr) with about 150 foreign company names full of funky accents of many different kinds to be converted to HTML. Before I resign myself to spending a whole afternoon replacing them all with character entities, I was wondering if there's a better way? perhaps you could do something with the charset? Thanks for any help! Kirsty
  13. Hey Wizely, thanks for the advice Yeah I guess not buying any at all would be an option, but I'm afraid as a naturally paranoid person I think it would prey on my mind a bit I don't think £200 a year is very expensive for someone that's earning already, but as they seem to want it as a lump sum at the beginning, before I earn a penny, it's a lot to cough up right now. And with no guarantee I'll make it back it seems a bit of a gamble. I don't even mind paying it, but I want to know if I do that it's not going to let me down. Ah, I will continue to google ...
  14. Hey there, thanks for helping me out I've had a look at a few of the choices available, but most of them won't give you a quote without you giving them your name, address, etc (which I suppose I shouldn't worry about, but habits die hard ...) The best deal I've been able to find so far (hmm, actually make that the only deal) is £200 per annum for £500,000 cover or £245 for £1 million. On top of that they offer legal expenses insurance for £75 / year. As far as I can tell from the (very limited) information they give is that this would cover any expenses arising from tax disputes and generally doesn't seem to have much to do with me as my business will be very small and I'm hoping it won't be hard to keep track of all my incomings / outgoings. However I'd hate to find myself in the position where my insurance didn't cover whatever eventuality came up. I don't know if anyone knows anything I should look out for in an insurance policy? Some must be better than others but I don't know what my priorities should be when choosing. No one will be coming to my flat, so I don't think I need public liability insurance, but are there any other kinds I should consider? I'm going to go and start contacting some of the larger companies soon for quotes, but if anyone knows of any questions I should ask them or anything I should check up on before I commit to anything I'd be most grateful if you could share your knowledge / experience, because I'm skint and can't afford to mess up. £200 is a lot of money to do someone a free website! Perhaps it's possible to state in a contract that you won't be held liable for any financial loss incurred? But maybe that wouldn't stop someone trying their luck anyway, and landing you with all the resulting legal expenses and loss of earnings etc. And then, maybe it wouldn't hold any weight at all? Aargh.
  15. Hi, I'm setting up as a self employed web designer, and I'm doing free websites for people to get myself started. I've had a couple of requests to do online shops but one of the things I need to find out first is if I'll need insurance (professional indemnity or otherwise) and would I need it even if my client wasn't paying me? For one of them I'm looking at using shopping cart software that comes with his hosting package, if a problem arose from using this software would I be accountable? Any advice would be really great! Kirsty
  16. Hi, I just checked the one that I changed in FF3 and it worked fine, exactly the same as when I got it off the web apart from the divs lined up. The only part of the code I changed (apart from closing the div) were: #boxone { width:467px; float: left;} #boxtwo{ float: left;} I haven't deleted the CSS file I have here yet so if you want it let me know and I'll send it to you Kirsty
  17. Oh, I just noticed that. They're very tiny! If this is a finished website rather than just an idea you're putting up then at the least your contact detail should maybe be somewhere more obvious? Still like the general look of it though ...
  18. Hi there, had a look at your css and html, I think if you close your boxone div that'll help, at the moment boxtwo is inside it. Then float boxone and boxtwo left, taking away your position: relative, and they should line up nicely Hope it works out, Kirsty
  19. I kinda like it, I mean it doesn't do anything at the moment, but if they were links on the page and there was somewhere you could click for some info and to contact it would be quite charming I like how simple it is and also the way you've done the name. Kirsty
  20. i've not used it yet, but i'm hoping xampp will work for me for the same thing. it's an apache server that comes with php that you can run from your computer or a pendrive. you can download it from here: apache friends hope that's some help
  21. hey guys, thanks so much for your help! i'm going to give it a bash but i think i can see already that it'll work. thankyou for specifying what's causing the problem though, it had me stumped kirsty
  22. i don't know that going private would be any protection against shoddy dentistry. a dentist working on commission is a bit of a scary thought ... ask people who live near you, they'll probably know if their own dentist is any good?
  23. hi, i wonder if anyone could shed any light on a weird weird thing that happens to one of my sites in internet explorer 7? i have a <ul> at the top of the page and if you increase or decrease the text size (by pressing ctrl + or -, not by going into the veiw menu at the top of the browser) everything in the list moves into an ugly looking place that makes no sense at all to me. even weirder because it's fine at normal size but exactly the same thing happens whether you make it bigger or smaller. have a look, it's really strange - gav's website has this ever happened to anyone else?
  24. hi aj, or everyone, i don't know who i'm talking to now ... i've done my best to add your code, and it seems to be working almost, but i was wondering if i could ask you a couple of questions about it? here's what i've put above the html tag ... <?php include session_start(); if (is_numeric($_SESSION['last'])) {$difference = time() - $_SESSION['last']; $_SESSION['last'] = time();} else {$_SESSION['last'] = time();} ?> and in the body ... <?php function spamcheck($field) {$field=filter_var($field, FILTER_SANITIZE_EMAIL); if(filter_var($field, FILTER_VALIDATE_EMAIL)) {return TRUE;} else {return FALSE;}} function emailHeal($str) {$injections = array('/(\n+)/i', '/(\r+)/i', '/(\t+)/i', '/(%0A+)/i', '/(%0D+)/i', '/(%08+)/i', '/(%09+)/i'); $str = preg_replace($injections,'',$str); return $str;} $healedText = emailHeal($_REQUEST['email']); if (!isset($_REQUEST['email'])) {echo "no address found";} else {$mailcheck = spamcheck($_REQUEST['email']); if ($mailcheck==FALSE) {echo "but there was something wrong with your address.";} else {if ($difference > 60) {$email = $healedText ; $subject = $_REQUEST['subject'] ; $message = $_REQUEST['message'] ; mail("kirsty@tangledfrog.com", "Subject: $subject", $message, "From: $email" ); echo "Your message has been sent.";} else {echo "You must wait 1 minute before submitting again";}}} ?> i know it's a bit of a brainful, but if you (or anyone) could clear up a couple of points for me i would be most grateful. first is although the page runs fine and doesn't let me refresh within 1 minute, it shows this error code and two more almost identical above where the content is meant to be: Warning: include(1) [function.include]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/tangledf/public_html/test/test.php on line 2 should i have created another file to go with this php file to make the session work? the other thing (and this is probably me splitting hairs) is that my (!isset($-request['email'])) doesn't seem to do anything. if i submit without putting in an email address it returns the "something wrong with your address" message that is in the next part of the code. i'm not sure why it's missing it, but seeing as the spamcheck function catches it anyway maybe i should just delete that part altogether? i don't know if it helps any, but the form i'm working on is here. thankyou to anyone who can help me out
