  1. Nice! Wish I'd known that! Will refer to this thread if I do this again! Thanks
  2. I'm relieved to say that the new website did start working. I just had to be more patient!! It's a stressful time whenthe client is asking you why it's not working, when someone spots a dead link (Some images and links had absolute links to the old, temporary address) and I couldn't actually log in to fix them! What I did manage to do while it wouldn't load for me was to use a browser compatibility site to log in (allbeit for only a few minutes at a time!) And I also found I could see the new site with a VPN, pretending I was elsewhere in the world, that showed me the new site too I realised!
  3. Thanks, that's encouraging! It had to happen as a weekend started didn't it!
  4. I've been setting up a website for a client and have got into a right mess! The website was held with a company, over a decade ago, recently they went out of business (But were bought out by Plusnet - and supplied free hosting - result!) But the hosting was basic. I set up a new wordpress site under new hosting, with Bluehost, using a temporary name until we were ready to go live. Yesterday I was asked to go live with the new design. So I did two things at once - Transfered ownership of the domain name to a new owner, and at the new owner's side initiated the incoming transfer and also set new nameservers so once it arrived it would also be pointing to the new hosting. For some reason the new site isn't loading on anything other than my mobile!? Two windows machines of mine, trying three browsers each, load the old site still. Yet my phone loaded the new one. And I asked family members to check on their computers and they have the new one too. But both myself and my client are only loading the old site. EDIT - Now my phone is loading the old site again! I spent an hour or so on chat with the hosts yesterday but they say they can see the new site fine too. I can't access the site anywhere right now, if anyone sees a mistake I can't access wp-admin to change it! I did try a browser compatibility site and logged in to make a quick change on one page, but they are quite short sessions so I can't continue like that - and the client is asking me why they can't see their new website yet! Any ideas? The website is www.maisonbleue.co.uk - If you see a grey central column and a guy taking a wine bottle from the shelf then that's the old website - if you see a white design with a waitress laying a table then that's the new one. Please can anyone advise? Are these just things that happen in the first 24 hours of a transfer? Can I advise her that it will all come to life when it's ready?? Thanks!

Thanks - I was nervous! It's the sort of thing I'll do on a Friday afternoon, then brick the whole site and panic about being offline for a weekend! So I waited for the beginning of the week and moved everything from my root folder into a backup file, then copied the entire wordpress site back to the root. Tons stopped working! I was planning on running a migration plugin from within wordpress, but I couldn't log in without a cookies error, so I ended up asking my hosts for help. They reverted my very busy htaccess file for a default one and that brought things back to life. Then they thankfully ran the script to update all the links in the site to the new address, so I didn't have to do it myself. So I guess if I hadn't have had a glitchy htaccess file I may have found it easy enough, but I'm so glad I had the hosts to help, and I'm glad I finally bit the bullet and simplified my site, it was pretty crazy having some pages on one system and some on another! I've now run dead link checkers, a 301 redirects plugin (so I never have to touch htacess again and risk killing the site! )
  7. Forgive me if this is in the wrong section! I've designed my website in the past using coding, in Dreamweaver, though I don't know what if doing a lot of the time, Google has gotten me through! I added a blog to my photography business website, using WordPress, in the folder /blog/, and bought a template in both WordPress and html, so the user couldn't really tell which of the sites they were in. The time has come I thought, to move the whole website to WordPress, doing all the edits in the WordPress dashboard makes a lot more sense than some in Dreamweaver, plus all plugins etc would be better if they were the same site-wide. So I've remade my homepage, in the /blog/ folder. And in fact made the while site in there. I'm a bit scared if I'm honest about simply moving my whole site back from /blog/ to the root folder, as I'm sure tons of in-page links will stop working. Or perhaps the whole DB will disconnect. I've really got no clue. Anyone have any tips? Any plugin, apps or articles that will help me finding and updating loads of links? I tried adding a forward to my htaccess file moving visitors to the root into /blog/folder, but what I did created a redirect loop that I couldn't fix even when I removed the line! My hosts had to revert me back to an earlier backup of the whole site! Can anyone let me know the correct syntax fory htaccess file, to forward visitors to my homepage, off to the new one? That will tide me over until I'm brave enough to move the whole site over! Thanks
  8. Good idea, I'll caption an image every once in a while, the thought of sitting down to alt-tag every one of thousands of images was enough to put me off starting!
  9. Perhaps I've made another error - because adding alt text to thousands of images was impractical, I have, for quite some time, named all the images with the wedding venue name and my company name. And people have said they find my images on google images. So I've thought it was working. But perhaps that's keyword cramming too? Unless there's a plugin for bulk naming alt tags with venue name or something useful rather than nothing at all on thousands of images
  10. Thanks Fisicx, I'll get cracking (There's rather a lot to do!!...)
  11. Thanks Fisicx for your very detailed answer. I've never really cared about how the website performed as so much work I get has come straight from recommendations, it's only now, after years of bad practice that I've decided to have a big push at correcting all the terrible SEO elements of my site! I thought I had Verified the Google listing, but it seems not, so I've started the process again and am waiting for the postcard to arrive in the post. I will get working on creating any non-wordpress pages in Wordpress, so the whole site will live in the Wordpress side, then I guess just leave it in the /blog/ folder and then forward everything there. Or do you think there's a benefit to going to the effort of moving the whole Wordpress site to the root folder? Worried about breaking it!! I'll get working on filling the blogs with content, and I'll remove the repeated company name in the titles. When you say, with my page title I'll be lumped in with every other wedding photographer site in the UK, what do you suggest is the important change? Adding my region? That's the one part of your answer I'm afraid I didn't get! Thanks
  12. I'm starting to look at my underperforming website's SEO, particularly the online reputation, and found my Google 'My Business' listing doesn't show as even existing when searching for my online presence. I had someone show me a Silktide report yesterday that said it was missing, and today found a search tool from 'Moz' that says the same. It certainly exists, and it's got some good reviews on it that would help my ranking too. Any ideas? Also, my website is showing as not being updated in 100 days or so, but I have been uploading blogs, to a wordpress part of my site under a folder /blog. So I'm worried, is Google not crawling in the Wordpress part of my site at all?? Any reason it would hit a wall here?
  13. I'm having trouble setting up reCaptcha on a form that's already in place. Every guide I'd ever seen (and I've been googling about 20 of them!) Seem to assume I'm proficient at coding, however I'm a little lot, and at ever single guide I completely hit a wall when it comes to server-side integration, to verify the response. The Guide just says That's all. then lists my codes. With all the other stages it was step-by-step, paste this bit into your header, etc etc. Suddenly they give no guide at all! Or am I missing something? I've got he recaptcha to show up, and it turns to a nice tick when I click it, however it still send the form, even if I haven't clicked it! Any help hugely appreciated! Here's the page with the form: http://www.lavenhamphotographic.co.uk/availability.html
  14. I've changed my domain name, and have set up my redirects as follows: Old name has a redirect set to the exact same url and folder structure at the new name. (aLL EXCEPT ONE FOLDER, WHERE SOME cms sales software runs. RemoveHandler .html .htm AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .htm .html Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule !^view($|/) http://www.lavenhamphotographic.co.uk%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301] Options +ExecCGI AddHandler cgi-script .cgi This works fine New name has loads of redirects set to then send on the visitors to the new version of that page. There's also some historical file names that I've set redirects for in case anyone is still using an older link, at least I know what page they were going for, they'll end up somewhere relevant to where they were trying to go. RemoveType .php AddHandler application/php5-fcgi php Action application/php5-fcgi /cgi-bin/php5fcgi.fcgi RemoveHandler .html .htm AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .htm .html Options +ExecCGI AddHandler cgi-script .cgi ErrorDocument 404 /notfound.html redirect 301 /wedding-photographer-suffolk-essex.htm /index.html#destination1 redirect 301 /wedding/photographer-suffolk-essex.htm /index.html#destination1 redirect 301 /faq.htm /frequently-asked-questions.html redirect 301 /wedding-photos-online.htm http://www.lavenham-photographic.co.uk/view/index.php?category=gallery/weddings redirect 301 /availability.htm /availability.html redirect 301 /wedding/photographer/availability.htm /availability.html redirect 301 /wedding-albums.htm /wedding-albums.html#albums redirect 301 /wedding/albums.htm /wedding-albums.html#albums etc etc this works fine too. All seems to work now, but is any of this technically wrong, with regards to SEO particularly?
  15. It's OK- found it! I've got a missing space where redirect 301 runs straight into the /wedding/photographer/.... Just the pitfall of doing so many lines!!
  16. I've got two versions of my website - one hyphenated, one not. I've always had my website on the hyphenated name, and the other had a <.*> rediect on the whole site. I've just done a redesign and now is the time to do away with the hyphen in the name! So I've go the new site on the name I'd like to use, and I've written out quite a list of 301 redirects to send visitors to the new design. I can't do a complete forward on the whole site, as a photo sales CMS system still needs to run on the old domain, also any google links etc need to find their specific new page. this new htaccess file causes me a 500 internal server error though. I can't figure out why though, it's the same htaccess file I always used, but with a longer list of redirects, thats all. Any bad syntax in this file? (I hope this makes sense!! Sorry for the long file to follow!! RemoveHandler .html .htm AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .htm .html Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^lavenham-photographic\.co\.uk RewriteRule ^(.*)$
