    I have never applied for a job in the web design world, so maybe I am way off on this, but my thought would be that it is never a mistake to show any and all work experience that you have had over the years. From an employer's point of view, they are looking for more things than just specific work experience. They could be looking at your loyalty, critical thinking skills, leadership, etc. So I think by listing previous work, you can show that you are a hard worker and maybe point out any skills you gained that would help you in future jobs. Hope that helps.

    I'm 29 and got my first Web-Dev job in August last year. I'd been travelling for two years and previous to that had a series of dead end jobs, nothing related to the web. I just spent around 4-5 months studying everything I could find on web design & web development, built up a portfolio by doing free and relatively low paid websites for friends. Put up a load of code examples on Js Fiddle.

    On my CV I very briefly mentioned my previous employment - no more than a few sentences - Most was not relevant to web design.

    My employers said the reason I got the job is that they saw I had a real passion for learning and self improvement, my knowledge at the time had some gaps but they can easily be filled if somebody is wanting and willing to learn. Do your homework on the organisation you want to apply to and tailor your cv to them. - that should go without saying though really.

    The gap is caused by setting the display propery on the li elements to inline-block. Set them to block and float them all to the left and there will be no gap. Similarly to what Junior said: You should just set the border right property on the anchors, and on the first-child also set the border left property. On the last child set the border-right width to 0.

    If you do go ahead with floating the li's you will want a clearfix solution added to the parent ul:
    ul:before { display: table; clear: both; content: " "; ]
    The rest of the code:

    #main-nav li { display: block; float: left; } #main-nav a { color: #fff; text-decoration: none; padding: 37px 20px; display: block; border-right: #0F6 solid 1px; } #main-nav a:first-child { border-left: #0F6 solid 1px; } #main-nav a:last-child { border-right-width: 0; }
    * You don't need to set margins to 0 unless they have been explicitly set elsewhere as 0 is default margin value for all elements.

    you could possibly use the li:first-child or li:last-child so that you only need one border on the a selector.

    Here's a link to w3cshools page for this.
    http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/sel_firstchild.asp

    That way you can have the border on the left and then add a border to the right hand side of the last-child otherwise you will have borders in the middle twice the size of those on the outside.
