Hi all im running the woopra analytical software on my server for a certain website, and ive just heared about the iphone version for this software, you basically upload the folder to your server and then go to that folder on you iphone and it shows it, simple enough you may think, so if filled in the config as suggested with my api key and webaddress and when i go to the page i get the following error Your hosting provider is not allowing the application to fetch data from the Woopra Servers. You have to switch the PHP-Flag 'allow_URL_fopen' ON! (php.ini) now this is my own dedicated server so i have complete access, so first thing i did was to check the php.ini, in webmin all three files that it has linked and in each allow_URL_fopen was On, so ive been stumped on this, i thought it might have been a permissions issue still not sure, but its not allowing me to run this at all, i did a phpinfo() and saw that it was all turned on, im not sure what to do now im completely stumped. does anyone have any suggestions? thanks Dan

i totally agree on this i usually code with around 940px in mind, but the company i work for i always seem to get the kind of customers who have old machines using ie6 and smaller monitors, so i take the time to sit them down and just explain to them in layman's terms and always good to show them some stats etc, especially when it comes to things like browsers and screen sizes etc. at least then they walk out of the meeting understanding why its better to implement something in that format.

thanks for all the info guys ive managed to get postfix up and running now, and by using virtualmin ive got it working with all virtual servers, as well as having a place for them to login from the web so that good for me, i havent managed to get spam assasin working yet, or procmail as i seem to get errors and notifcations saying that its not installed under webmin weird as i did install and reinstalled it, ive also been looking into allowing outside access to the webserver ie via outlook expres so people can setup there account on outlook and retrieve it there, i need to setup dovecot pop3 i believe im not quite sure on this can someone maybe elaborate am i going the right way here, i gather that i do need to install a pop3 server to allow access is this correct?

would i only need the one license? as im only looking to allow the control panel to the root user which would be me, im looking at hosting some peoples websites on there as well, ive setup virtual hosting etc, but they are only going to have access to phpmyadmin(if they want db) and to webmail of some sought when i can get it setup. is it difficult to uninstall webmin and reinstall cPanel, as that price seems pretty fair and i would take that price if it was easy enough to convert across? thanks for the quickness in replying peartree

hi all just a couple of quick questions to fire out here, as you may or may not know i have got hold of a my first dedicated server, ive setup mysql, php etc and have virtual hosts running, im looking at maybe hosting 10 different websites on here, now the next thing that im thinking of setting up a mail server with it, as im only going to be handling a limited amount of emails i think it should be ok. the reson for this i hear you ask is because on my own website i have a contact form, and the form is meant to be emailed to my email address when submitted, the form works fine i know this, but the email doesnt send using the mail() php function, but the contact form doesnt send, is this because there is no MTA setup on the server as of yet? i thought it might have been but i wasnt 100% sure hence asking. next ive been looking at different MTA's and i would prefer to use QMAIL as its what we are using in work. im running ubuntu 8.10 on the server and have tried installing the QMAILROCKS installation to no avail it keeps failing at the same place, so im asking does anybody out there have any experience of setting up mail servers, and are willing to help out or even point me in the right direction to a nice HOW TO setup, im really looking for the ability to add emails for virtual domains. im not sure if this is possible in POSTFIX, but either or would be nice if you can. and thanks again all and happy new year thanks Dan

thanks for that mikejonesy, im still having some issues with the two ip addresses, i was given one in the first place and i asked for a second one for the reason stated above, i have setup a virtual host for that second ip address that should point to specific folder and show something, i have gone to free parking created the subdomain and pointed it specifically to that second ip address, so gone into web min and server -> apache webserver -> i have then gone to global configuration and into networking and addresses and told apache to listen to that second ip address as well but when i try to restart apache i have nothing but errors and it wont let apache start, as soon as i remove this second ip address it works ok. does anybody have any suggestions on how to do this exactly?

ok all ive just been assigned my second ip address for my server. and know i would like to setup a subdomain from my main domain sub.dansdomain.co.uk and have this sub domain point to the second ip address, so im using freeparking, ive gone into managing my dns and added the subdomain sub and the ip address for it is the ip address that i was supplied. is there anything else i need to do? so from here i have gone into webmin and told it to only listen on the port i want and to only that new ip address so when typing in sub.dansdomain.co.uk:portnumber it should take me to webmin, but it doesnt seem to work it just locks me out of webmin i can change the setting through SSH so its ok. is there something i need to do with this ip address when i was given it? do i need to tell apache to listen on it all ports??? and help would be much appreciated thanks DAn

thanks very much guys, there has been some good suggestions given here and definetly things that i can say that can be brought forward in the next meeting, i especially like brendan_qu comment about the 700px - 800px imaginary line this is something that i will definietly use and suggest that my designer will also use ( as he also does print design for the same company) he does sometimes give stuff on a3 to the client.. thanks again guys great answers Dan

Hi Folks we have a bit of a debate occuring in the company i work for, mainly between the boss (non designer/coder) and us webdesigner/coders. all to do with screen real estate. now our screen that we show prespective clients any type of design is of a resolution of 1024 * 768, we tend to create sites, that are slightly smaller in width, but lately our boss seems to disagree with any type of design that doesnt fit onto one page!! meaning they dont want to have to scroll down as well as scroll across, now the scrolling across i understand as its something i must admit we try our hardest to stop as this is the worst kind of scroll in my opinion, but surely the market out there is used to scrolling down aint they? whats your verdict on this? one of the designs we just templated out looked superb just the bottom navigation ( which was just about us, contact us) didnt appear on the screen and you had to scroll down a little to get to it, the boss didnt like this, i have to ask what are your thoughts on this kind of thing sometimes its near impossible to make a page fit into one single screen without having the need to scroll as some pages contain that much content, but this must be the norm and end users are surely used to this by now and accept it. surely a page full of (relevant information) is better than one containing only 3 - 4 lines!!! well let me know your thoughts and feelings on this kind of thing

lol true badmotherz quite true, it is a pain sometimes having to change things to get it to work in ie6, the strange thing is a lot of the clients i seem to get still seem to be running ie 6 which is a right mare. and its not like i can just say to them u know what just upgrade your browser as they would probably take offence and not want to use us!!! lol

hey all, just wondering if you might be able to help, im currently building a asp website for a client, and he has used an outside designer, who on first impressions doesnt look like he has designed a website before as hes used a very un websafe font throught the site, we built the initial design and layout and a couple of test pages to show him, of course the font wasnt the one he had used in the design. we debated this with the customer explaining every step of the way and he still says he wants this particular font, so we were stuff, we tried using the jquery sifr plugin to reporoduce the font but found that it wasnt great for multi line multi colored font etc, so we were stuck on that, and at this time rather down trodden as the work we had put in was wasted so to keep the client happy we explained that we could do it the way it looks but it would all be images, this isnt something that we wanted to do but he is being a nightmare, so its what we have done, even after explaining simple changes could take time as we have to edit images instead of normal text. so what i guess im asking was there another route we could have taken? we dont know flash that well so it was out of the window there, when you guys out there have had clients like this what have you said that has made them see sense? as doing it with images just seems a whole waste of our time and his money, as the reason he came to us over another company is the fact that we understand and use CSS a lot better than the other company he is with, so we were doing front end stuff and they where doing the backend db stuff for him.... thanks Dan

i do see what you mean by that, and at the end of the day it is the end user that counts, its just i do like to get fully valid css etc, so spending time going through it all again is sometimes very time consuming. even though the company where i work i must admit that fully valid css isnt a major thing, as again its the user expericence that is more important.

hi peeps, just a quick question of ethics i guess, throughout my short period of time as a web developer since graduating, ive always tried to develop a site that is usuable across a whole range of browsers, for me its easier to develop for ie7 firefox 2 & 3 safari etc, i always seem to spend most of my time, after finishing reworking this to get it to look right in ie 6, sometimes remaking seperate stylesheets with styles specific for ie6 and sometimes this takes time, now ive just found this little beauty while trawling through the net. body { background-color:red; _background-color:red; } as you can see that second style with the underscore will be picked up by only ie6 and then applied (well according to what i read, so dont go off on one if im wrong). Now with this in mind today i have found myself working on a site, instead of making seperate tweeks in a ie6 file, i have put the tweek inside the same css file with the underscore, now this has an advantage from what i can see, is that all the css is now in one file, and no need to go looking about to pick out the changes, so less stress when trying to pin point mistakes, now what my dilema is, is this, SHOULD I BE DOING THIS, ive read a million different posts about if your good at CSS tweeks wont have to be made, and only one style sheet would ever be needed that works across all browsers (so i kinda feel like im cheating a little with this underscore way), but all the sites i have built in some way needed a slight tweeking for ie6 to render correctly, and sometimes this only might be one or 2 rules in a seperate stylesheet, but apart from that everything renders fine across the bored in every other browser, so am i wrong in feeling bad about starting to take this approach and is it frowned upon be fellow developers??? would be good to know your thoughts on this thanks Dan

ok can i just ask one question about this reset file, i put it in the top of my file and my h2 all went to a small text size, so i took out the font-size:inherit; from the code and it worked ok, then i read the page a little more where it went on about the inherit. does this mean that i should then underneath define how i would like my h2 tags to look? what if i just want them to be normal, as if im honest i rarely dont edit my h sizes or features at all, but thinking about it now it is a good idea as it could in turn produce a bit more styling to the site... what to do you guys do when it comes to h tags do you always style them at the beginning and then just change as you go along by using different classes?? just got me thinking thats all thanks dan

hey peeps got a little problem of something so simple and not sure why its happening, i have a page that has a image as a background basically three columns that all and each div is a colum for the background now i have the width for each one set perfectly so when i view in safari and firefox the content appears within the correct place in the image but when i use ie7 it screws it all up, ive colored the content so i know where the box starts and ends just to check padding etc and still no joy at all, the widths seem to be marked up differently in IE, has anybody come across this before, ie in safari 160px is the correct width of the div but in ie7 it doesnt fill the space correctly??
