Migrating to new site - what to do about broken links and Google Indexing etc?
Actually, while I'm on the subject, I wonder if there any things which newbies always miss on launch? Do I need to prompt Google to reindex somehow for example? Or are there any other housekeeping type things you should do when launching a revamped site?

Migrating to new site - what to do about broken links and Google Indexing etc?
Hey Mike, how's it going? It's not a local one. I'll PM you the details if you like? I'm a bit reluctant to post it here as I've given the client access to the WordPress and they've started fiddling! If I post a link I'll feel compelled to explain the bits I didn't do! And then this page will be associated with the site on Google etc etc ... It's definitely been a good lesson in working with real clients! They're happy with it anyway and that's what counts I guess. But very happy to PM you a link if you're curious?

Thanks everyone, that's great, it gives me something to be getting on with. I've never heard of mod_rewrite-fu but I'll google it and see how far I get! Otherwise, good to know there's a plugin backup.

Migrating to new site - what to do about broken links and Google Indexing etc?
I'm a digital media student (so keen, but not so far off a beginner!) I've made a website for a charity (for free, for the experience). It's about to go live. However I wonder what I should do about the old URLs? The old site is a fairly simple HTML site (lots of tables - old-school! ) The new one is WordPress. I guess I need to set up some redirects. Do I just copy the URLs over to the new site and set them up individually or is there a cunning way to do this? Also does my client run the risk of loosing their google rankings? What can I do about that? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Website pricing question (for uni project)
Wow, that would come out at over £30K then!

Website pricing question (for uni project)
Brilliant, that's great, thanks very much (I just want to make sure that the imaginary figure I write down isn't so way off the mark as to be ridiculous!)

Website pricing question (for uni project)
Perhaps I made my question too specific? What I really want to know is roughly what kinds of figures would a company expect to change a university for a new website? I appreciate it's a how long is a piece of string question but I just want to know a very, very rough ball park - what would you think was a reasonable price for a project this size?

Website pricing question (for uni project)
I agree! But it's a group project and I can't change that bit. The imaginary project runs over 20 days with four webteam there for nearly all of it. To be fair, it's not only WordPress involved, there are custom bits that would need developing, and our lecturer said to allow contingency, so we certainly have done that! But I agree in reality that would be excessive. However all this is set in stone now, I can't change it, I just have to do my bit (writing a business case).

Website pricing question (for uni project)
I have to come up with a quote for a fictitious project, as part of a group assignment for uni. (I'm studying Digital Media as a mature student). The imaginary project is a university website. I won't bore you with the details but basically it'd be built in WordPress, and we've estimated it'd need about 75 working days from the web developers 15 days from the database administrator 25 days form the copywriters / content creators 10 days from general project support If anyone feels they could hazards a guess how much a company would likely quote for this, I'd be very grateful, as I'm really not sure! (This figure isn't the main point of the project by the way - it just need to be in there somewhere. Our lecturer said we don't even need to justify how we came up with the figure as long as it's in the right ballpark, so it's OK to ask you guys, it's not cheating honest! I'll reference this forum and I might even get brownie points for it! ) Thanks in advance

Where to get Bauhaus font (for WordPress site)?
I'm tempted to commit the cardinal sin of just putting the header in an image. They already suggested I do that and I was like "No! you just can't do that these days!" But I just want to get this job finished now! Is that bad?!

Where to get Bauhaus font (for WordPress site)?
Ha. They're a small charity, I'm doing the site for free. I doubt there's any budget for fonts! But I'll ask. Thanks for the reply

Where to get Bauhaus font (for WordPress site)?
I'm doing a site for a client, and they want Bauhaus for the site header text as that's what they use in print. I'm pretty new to all this so bear with me! I've found Bauhaus in a few places on the web, but they look .. umm .. dodgy! (Is it legal to use?) Can anyone recommend a good place to get it? With my last site I simply used Google Fonts - both from a plugin and in the CSS where necessary, but Google Fonts don't include Bauhaus of course. Thanks in advance

Holding page - feedback appreciated :)
Thanks for your replies everyone, it's much appreciated. I will add the border=0, good point. The "holding page" is a joke, yes

Holding page - feedback appreciated :)
Taking into account the following caveats: - this is a student-run site and we don't mind if it's a little rough around the edges - there will be another post-it note in the bottom middle which will balance it a bit better I think (just waiting for text details to be confirmed) - this'll only be there 3 weeks! - I know the images are massive! I'm going to optimise all of them tomorrow and re-upload (must go to bed soon! It's 2:30am here) What do you think to this holding page? www.burstradio.co.uk Any feedback gratefully received, thanks

CSS - nice way to display a grid of images? Inspiration needed!
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm keeping it as a last resort! I managed to get IE to behave this time, by positioning the images using relative positioning instead of a combination of padding / margins which just always seemed to display differently in IE.

CSS - nice way to display a grid of images? Inspiration needed!
Thanks for your reply. I clicked on your music site first by mistake, nice site I saw your adverts for reporters recently actually (I'm not far from Brighton) but I didn't apply as being a mum to a small child I know more about nappies than clubbing these days! Thanks for the link, that's a nice layout, good for inspiration I've managed to make quite a nice simple layout myself, and I was pleased with it until I looked at it in IE. Grr! Why can't they just comply to the standards it's such a pain in the bum! About to start a thread about it ...

CSS - nice way to display a grid of images? Inspiration needed!
I'm playing around with nice ways to display a grid of images in CSS. Each image is a square (150px), there are 30 or so of them, and I want it to reveal another layer (prob just text) on mouseover. I'd like it to look quite slick, probably through some nice borders / clean styling. Does this sound like anything you've seen? If anyone could give us a link to something like this for inspiration I'd be very grateful! Thanks

Examples of nice ways to display a page of sponsor logos
I have to put together a page of sponsor logos. I was thinking of something along the lines of each logo being in a box, with info on mouse-over, but I'm open to suggestion! If you were doing it in an old-school way (which I'm not!) then it would be a table with images lined up in rows. I've been googling to look for inspiration, but all the pages of logos I've found are not pretty at all. I had something quite slick / cool in mind. I know I can just stick them all in divs of course but I'm looking for tips on making it look attractive really. If anyone could give us a link to an example of this kind of thing I'd be very grateful. Of course it only needs to be a page of images, not necessarily logos. Thanks

HTML forms - (probably) stupid question!
Thanks for the reply. OK, I think I get it. You're saying that even when it's in a form, mailto works the same as when you use it on the page, I can see how that wouldn't be ideal! I'll have a think about the PHP bit and come back when I get it ...

Sage advice cepa, I'm sure

HTML forms - (probably) stupid question!
Here's a silly question for you guys ... In an HTML form, when you specify that the data should got to an email address e.g. action="mailto:someone@whatever.org" how does the email actually get there? Surely it's not enough to just write this, it has to be connected to an email account at the sending end, surely? I expect this shows a basic lack of understanding of how it all works, but I'm keen to be enlightened!

What should I do to improve this site?
I like the background too Perhaps I'm biased though! It's worth bearing in mind though that his is student radio not a business site. I think I may try a new version of the background which scrolls and which fades to grey around the edges. "it would be better if you toned everything down ditched the colour and use loads of grays but keep that bright logo on " good idea, I'll give it a go when I next have a play around with it. " lose the fully justified text and go with left aligned" I hadn't noticed it was justified, I agree totally, left aligned is much better. A favicon? Of course! Thanks everyone too for pointing out the glitches and the typo.

How quickly do you think I can learn PHP? (In at the deep end style!)
So, I said I'd update a website. I guess I have intermediate HTML and CSS skills, and very basic Javascript. Most of it has already been done mostly by someone else, and what needs doing now is basically adding some content, beautifying it a bit and adding some bits to the forms (javascript). But now I've looked at it I realise it's been built using PHP. Eek! My knowledge of PHP is very basic indeed! But PHP can't be that hard - can it? I mean all the hard work's been done for me, right? The site is set up already, all the pages are there and the forms are mostly done. It's just a case of finding the right files and editing the good old HTML & CSS, isn't it? The thing thats's got me really stumped though is I have no idea how to set up a test environment. If it was a site using static pages I'd make a copy to play around with but that's not going to work here is it? I don't know what the story is with the guy who did most of the site, I'll find out on Monday when I explain it's a bit harder than I thought! I think he's a work experience student and I'm guessing he just ran out of time to finish it while he was there. Ideally he could support me on this but I get the impression he's not really available and i'm pretty much on my own here. Am I bonkers to consider this? I mean - PHP - how hard can it be?! Any advice on where to start / what questions to ask would be much appreciated!
