    I bought books on these, but the Rails one was out of date - new version is different to the one they teach in the book. Not terribly useful...

    You should be able to do this with pure CSS using hover: pseudoclass. I avoid javascript as much as possible, because it makes sites slow and anyway it doesn't work on all computers (where people have scripts turned off, for example).
