  1. i'm curious as to what the average self-employeed freelance web designer is making these days. What sort of yearly turnover and profit margins are people generating? These dont have to be exact and i understand it could be pretty personal for some, so please dont feel the need to state that or post if you feel uncomfortable
  2. not at this forum. .. im directing this at those who have taken a risk, to run their own business and get a product out there. Why? What drives you? What keeps you going through the hard times? Do you still hold the same core values as when you first started out? Do you eat sleep breathe and practically live what you do ?
  3. took out a subscription to web designer
  4. sound perfect advice! When i registered as self employeed I hadnt actually started trading and was preparing to, they wanted me to contact them when i had started trading
  5. cool, good portfolio you have! If you need anyone to do designs/skins for your carts, maybe we could work together
  6. ok kool, thanks for the feedback, so from web designer magazine, i can expect more reviews and resources, where as other magazines provide actual code samples and tutorials etc?
  7. pretty decent article! regarding a business card I have a bright blue one, i learnt from a guy who used to have bright yellow and pink ones that people will not forget something like this as it stands out from the normal boring plain white ones!
  8. This is sound advice and a good structure to stick to! Take into account also what you're offering, bug fixing, cross-browser compatibility and sell your service as a quality service in which your client will feel assured they are paying a justified amount
  9. i have one account for which i use for all the business incomings and outgoings. Recording everything I have recipts and bank statements and i just list my incomings and outgoings into 2 excel spreadsheets
  10. i did that when starting out, its not good to do them all the time however to get started, why not try local charitys and hospitals/hospices etc
  11. unfortunate that your client wants this. When I had this issue before, I just told the client about potential problems and that his business is unique and that a website is his brands identity and really sold him the idea of being unique and we moved forward creating a great website! Carbon copying a website, is not so good, not only on a legal side but also from the point of view that it shows lack of imagination and that the business has nothing unique about it
  12. www.altwebdesignuk.com Feed back appreciated, thanks!!!
  13. always used tinymce and integrate it into a custom built CMS, its a WYSIWYG editor
  14. i find the black font a little harsh but i love the cardboard box background, brilliant!!
  15. Firstly, i slow right down and focus, else i end up doing what you did, I read a brief, make key notes and then re-read and double check my notes. I pay attention to key fetaures and requirements, noting what elements should be where and how important they are. When doing a design, i usually have something in my head, which i hand sketch on to paper and then use this to develop the design in photoshop. Ive always found it easier doing a hand sketch first, rather than just diving into a design in photoshop.
