Adaptive resizing of a centered picture?
I have a simple web page here Domain which is framed and links to here Webspace. (My apologies if my terminology is wrong! ) At the moment there is a fixed space at the top, and the picture is centred in the browser window. What I'd like is for the pic to change size, such there is 20% black space either side. Would be nice if the space at the top did the same, but I understand the difficulty with that. Is there an easy way to do this? Cheers!

The Joy of Bit.Ly
I was going to post the following on a forum elsewhere (for filmmakers) and then thought it might be a good idea to run it past you guys for any corrections or tips (and maybe some of you may pick up some tips from it yourselves) Some urls have been changed to protect the innocent... What do you think? Any related tips? p.s. Are there any alphanumeric sequences to be avoided?

Inserting swf or flv into Yahoo mails?
Cheers. I suspected not, but I'm sure i can remember seeing something like that once upon a time. I'm sure that one day it will be possible again, once security issues have been sorted out. Right now internet security's a joke!

Inserting swf or flv into Yahoo mails?
I've done some searching and found a bit of advice on putting an swf into your signature (see below) but when I try it Yahoo strips the it out. Ideally I'd like to embed a Flash movie into an email, but I've never seen it done, and suspect that even if i could my mails might end up in the trash. Is there anything I can do safely and how? If not with yahoo, with some other mailing system? It seems a shame if all our mails are allowed to contain are images and links, when it's technically possible to do so much more. The code recommended to me (that didn't work) was <OBJECT classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://active.macromedia.com/flash2/cabs/swflash.cab#version=4,0,0,0" WIDTH=550 HEIGHT=400> <PARAM NAME=movie VALUE="http://www.yourcompany.com/flash.swf"> <PARAM NAME=quality VALUE=high> <PARAM NAME=bgcolor VALUE=#FFFFFF> <EMBED src="http://www.yourcompany.com/flash.swf" quality=high bgcolor=#FFFFFF WIDTH=550 HEIGHT=400 TYPE="application/x-shockwave-flash" PLUGINSPAGE="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash"> </EMBED> </OBJECT> Cheers!

The naming of images...
Doesn't that invite bandwidth theft? Like, if I'm looking for an image of a fruitbowl 100x100... Anyhows, a name like that isn't going to up your SEO rating is it? Unless you're selling fruit bowls, in which case you might be better off with a name likely to entice a potential customer? If not, then something that makes your site more attractive..? That said, there's a lot of sense in your startegy in keeping you organised. Thoughts anyone?

The naming of images...
How should I name images with SEO in mind..? Should_it_be_like_this? Would-this-be-ok? Or is this acceptable? Cheers!

'Subscribe to Updates'
What's an easy way to have a box in which folks put their email addresses, which I somehow collect, and then send them news of updates..? I'm planning to add AddThis to my site, and currently using 1&1 as a host, if that's at all relevant. Cheers!

What is the best software for web design?
Maybe you can get an old copy of Dreamweaver cheap. If you're starting out you won't be needing the newer advanced features. It really makes life easy, though it does generate a mountain of code I find myself sifting through and deleting.

And how would he know..? I've changed my site now: <- believe it or not, that smiley is now a link! Thanks for all the help.

that <h1> tag
Not sure How useful for HTML either. Run http://www.google.com/ through it and up come 3 invisible text messages! Naughty Google. Run my page, and it tells me: "The tool hasn't found any invisible text." I tried pointing: "It's right there!" but... And no, I did a bit of searching but found nothing to answer the questions I asked. I'll just follow your tip and copy Google's header coding - we presume they know what they're doing, do we not..?

Oh, BTW http://www.google.co.uk/ run through the W3 HTML validator produced 41 Errors, 2 warning(s) and this very page here gets 134 Errors, 108 warning(s) So I'm doing quite well with 202 errors, considering I have 14 sets of coding for the embed windows!

Someone reports you as Spam
I dunno if it's even happened. I notice WOT have given me a less than 100% rating, but that could just be disgruntled competitors, or folks who think my site should rate them higher, or just idiots. Lots of them about.

You're expecting us to think..? Hold on, which one before? No, don't bother - I get what you mean...

that <h1> tag
Just found this Hidden text and links Hiding text or links in your content can cause your site to be perceived as untrustworthy since it presents information to search engines differently than to visitors. Text (such as excessive keywords) can be hidden in several ways, including: * Using white text on a white background * Including text behind an image * Using CSS to hide text * Setting the font size to 0 So that's a no no.
-
Someone reports you as Spam
Right, so how do you reverse that? And how do you even know it's happened? EDIT: Ah, thanks to Drewster I've found my answer to the first question http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35843 Is there a way of answering the second?

Someone reports you as Spam
Suppose you do something like put text on your page that's the same color as the background. Maybe quite innocently. Someone then reports you as spam... So you fix the text, but how do you fix the negative reporting?

that <h1> tag
Thanks Wickham, that's a really useful (and worrying!) link. So I should get that black text off the page pronto! I'll start a separate thread on this issue of being 'reported'. And here's a link you folks might find useful: SEO for video - gotta read all that sometime myself! S3, thanks for the Google code. That has to be best practice. All I need do is copy, alter, paste. Wish I'd thought of that. Smart.

that <h1> tag
Thanks S3. Very useful. I didn't realise that linking from my domain to the framed page would cause a problem. I guess with a simple page it doesn't. And most of those 'errors' are the Flash embedding codes. But you're right - I'll split the page. particularly since I'll be adding more content. Though on every machine I've viewed it on it loads quickly. Anyone else having probs? There's only about 65k of html content - the rest is graphics held at photobucket (they're tiny), and the embedded windows - I can't do anything about how long they take to show a thumbnail graphic. That said, it hasn't stopped the page ranking highly: http://ow.ly/FGFP I think that SEs accept the simple kind of framing I'm using, where one site name links to a framed html doc hosted elsewhere. Any more frames would of course cause a problem. If you look at my page (must get more visitors! ) Video Embed tests You'll see there's no place to put a content description up top without a complete redesign. I want to reach the video windows as soon as poss. Maybe I misunderstand the whole SEO thing. I thought SEs weighted heavily the metatags, title, the h1 content, and the alt text of the first image. So if the alt text and title of an image is within h1 tags, but there is no other text there, does it get read as the h1's text content? And does putting the first image within the h1 mean the first image alt text gets counted twice (once as h1 content and again as the first image alt text?) or does the SE move on to the next image and look at the alt text for that..? So is HTML height="0" an ok workaround to include an h1 you want read by a SE but you don't want a user to see?
-
that <h1> tag
So you reckon that hiding it using html code, like the way I have done, is ok? I like the idea of using height="0". Would a search engine not know that what followed was hidden text though? I could do a test - put some text in that's meaningless, wait a few days, and then see if a search finds it... Anyone able to say if the title tag is really worth including?
-
that <h1> tag
Thanks smoothonline - a few things for me to google there and get my head around! BlueDreamer, that sounds like an excellent idea. I did my best to Google it and found it also suggested elsehwere on other forums, but no one (no one that I found) seems to be able to answer whether a search engine will use the alt text tag as the actual text in a header. Maybe you might know..? One interesting suggestion I found was to include a title tag <h1><img src="imagefile.gif" title="what it says in the image" alt="alternate text for the image"/></h1> so it would become <h1><img src="/xVideo_Embed_Tests%20files/YouTube-alternatives.jpg" title="Alternatives to YouTube - the best web video hosts compared" alt="Alternatives to YouTube - the best web video hosts compared" /></h1> But would repeating what is said in the alt text also in the title be a bad idea? Maybe I should vary the words somehow? But the question remains - would a search engine see any of this as h1 text?

that <h1> tag
When I first designed my website at Video Embed Tests I didn't think too much about SEO. However I later read up on it, and among other things learnt that the content of your <h1> heading is very important. So I snuck a <h1> in, but made it black and small. You can see it if you hit control(or apple)+a. Is this a bad idea..? Is there a better way of doing this without redesigning the whole page? Many thanks. p.s. any other SEO tips?
