Do I need an CMS?
I need some advice, please... I need to develop a web site that includes a blog, a forum and a place for members to submit articles (text + picture). It doesn't have to be anything flashy with screaming graphics or animation... Do I need an CMS for it? If yes, what kind? I'm a newby to this. Up till this point I've only had static sites and a Wordpress blog. Is this something Joomla would do? (Came across their site, but got a bit confused in terminology.) Can you suggest something I should learn that is free (I have hosting and domain covered already), allows for properly keyworded URLs (as opposed to numbered, like ucoz.com) and has templates that are not too hard to get or modify... Hopefully it is also something that's not too difficult to learn. At this point I know some html and css, but no PHP. Thanks

Can Someone using IE7 take a look please?
I've been trying to set up a new three column css design for a site. I tested it on IE6 and Mozilla 3. Can anyone with a different browser tell me if it looks ok? If the columns and footer are in the right spots? http://www.organicmakeupandskincare.com/TEST-FOLDER/ Thanks

Please Help! Three Column CSS for all browsers question
OK, I tried these changes. The right column remained narrow though, for some reason. And if the text is too long, it gets bumpted down (The left column and the middle work fine -- no bumping down) Can the right column be made wider somehow? which numbers do I tweak?

Please Help! Three Column CSS for all browsers question
Please help! I desperately need to set up a three column design with header and footer. I need something that works for all common browsers. Here is where I'm stuck. I found some good examples of sites that work, like this one: http://www.strictlycss.com/examples/three-...mn-layout-6.asp It has three fixed columns (I need fixed middle for sure), and footer that stays in place. My problem is that I need different size. My header picture is 865px and that cannot be changed. I also need the side bars to be more than 160px (that's the size of adsense boxes that go in on some of the pages). I tried to do the math and adjust numbers in that layout, but I can't figure out what's what. Can anyone help me? Again, specific requirements are -- header picture has to fit in, and it's 865px wide and 183px tall. The design has to be centered on the page. The width of all columns has to be fixed (not expandable). Left and right columns have to have at least 160px space for inserts, so with padding and just in case it should be about 170 pixels. And a footer in the bottom (for short menu and copyright notice). Thanks! PS: I'm not necessarily fixated on that particular template. It's just the only one I found that worked in all browsers I tested. But the sizes do not fit my site...

Hello from a very confused web design reentrant!
Just to make sure I understand it right -- I make all my pages into php files, and then when they on the web they'll get displayed as html? And the menu and footer I create as separate regular files, call them php and then include into the index and all the other pages? And lastly -- in the past if I wanted to have a three column page design I would do it with a table. Then menu would be on the left, text in the middle and extra column (for ads, notes, etc) in third column. How does it work without a table? Can somebody point me to which CSS section covers that? So far all I'm reading is about fonts and heading controls, I didn't yet find how it would tell what section appears where on the page and how wide it needs to be... Thank you very much for all the help. It's beginning to clear up now.

Hello from a very confused web design reentrant!
Tables are gone too? Thanks for the w3schools idea. I just refreshed on my HTML. XHTML doesn't sound as bad as I feared. Diving into CSS as I type. Hopefully this will all clear up soon. For now I just need to figure out enough to make a simple design with a picture header, an adjustable menu (cause the list will grow as new articles and topics get included) on the left with thin border around it , and a few links at the bottom. For the site I'm doing it needs to be a very simple clean feel... So have tables been replaced with CSS or something else? And would CSS also format the PHP include? Just making sure I'm learning the right stuff...

Hello from a very confused web design reentrant!
Could you point me in the direction about where I can read about this beast? And if it figures into expression web? Thanks a million!

Hello from a very confused web design reentrant!
Oh my, now I'm even more terrified! People actually type it all out? So if you add a new menu item you have to go to each and every page to change it? WOW...

Hello from a very confused web design reentrant!
Hello everyone! I used to do some web design about 10 years ago. Back then it was all HTML and frames. Now I'm in a position where I need to design a site again... But there are no more frames. And lots of strange new words... So I got myself expression web and now I'm even more confused. I hope to find some answers on this forum. PS: So what replaced the frames? It's not like people now manually type the menus on every page, or do they?
