If the site is for the Marketing & Web Design Community why are a load of dentists and other non marketing businesses listed?

Unless your directory ranks well it's not worth paying you anything. People looking for service providers stopped using directories years ago - unless it's very niche or very local. But even then, a good marketing company would easily be able to rank higher than your directory and would dominate the map pack.

The directory is less about non web designers finding web designers and more about web designers finding referral partners (seo, social media, VA etc.). It's more about link building. So why a dentist sees value enough to sign up for a a free account here I don't know. The site is still new (less than 6 months old) so still working on promotion. 

Question - is it worth building social media accounts and local maps listing for a national / international directory?

No. If I want someone to help with SEO I won't be looking on SM or map listings.

If the directory is about finding referral partners maybe change the categorisation to limit which business type can join.

But this sort of thing has been tried many times before. I've joined dozens over the years to see if they work and they don't. But I have found some great partners on freelancer sites.

I've just joined and there is no categorisation!

And it shows my name not the business name.

And there isn't an option to delete my account

There is actually. Under manage account. Close account. 

For the categories. I'll look into this more. Thank you for the feedback.
