July 3, 20251 yr Hey everyone, I’ve recently noticed a significant drop in Google rankings for a few of my core pages that were performing well until last week. No manual actions in GSC, site speed and structure look fine, and backlinks haven’t shifted drastically. Before I dive into a full SEO audit, I’d love to hear your insights: What’s the first thing you usually check when rankings dip out of nowhere? Could a recent Google core update be causing this for niche sites? Can a competitor’s backlink growth alone cause such an immediate drop? I found this https://www.google.com/search?q=sudden+drop+in+google+rankings+what+to+check helpful, but I’d love some real-world advice from experienced folks here. Any thoughts, tools, or red flags to look for would be appreciated! Thanks,
July 3, 20251 yr Hey! Yeah, sudden drops can be super frustrating. First things I’d check: Any Google core update recently? Those can hit even stable sites. Compare content with competitors — maybe Google is favoring fresher or more detailed pages. Run a quick crawl check (Screaming Frog or GSC) for any hidden issues. Check if competitors gained strong backlinks fast. Also, this tool helps spot volatility: Quote https://www.semrush.com/sensor/ Keep us posted if you spot something specific!
July 3, 20251 yr @emily1221 - what's the website? Have you made ANY changes to the site? Have you done ANY linkbuilding? How big is this significant drop? Is is a 10, 20 or higher drop?
July 3, 20251 yr Author Thanks for the reply! I’ve already checked GSC (no manual actions), site speed is fine, and no crawl issues I can see. I haven’t changed content or done any recent link building either. The drop was around 15–25 positions on a few stable long-tail keywords. I’m keeping an eye on possible core updates, but nothing confirmed yet. Happy to hear any tools or checks you’d recommend beyond the usual — still trying to figure it out!
July 3, 20251 yr What's the website? What KW are you checking? There are no tools or tests that will give you the answers you are looking for. This is something that has to be done manually. GSC, page speed and crawl issues are all irrelevant. A drop in ranking will happen when Google decides you are no longer worthy of the rank. Which is why we need to see the site.
