I'd be really grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.

 

I need an image GD function that'll put another image from a GIF file onto the current image.

 

Is this possible?

Hi, have you tried using wideimage? (google it)

It's a small library that only requires GD2 (I think).

It's OOP based image manipulation and gives you easy access to lots of different functions (cropping, resizing, rotating and of particular interest to you, merging)

Might be what you're looking for
