301 Perm redirect how?

Featured Replies

:hi: Like my title haha nice and to the point. 8) I was told that I should have my goldsteinmedia.com pointing to my www.goldsteinmedia.com. But when I type either into my url bar the both go to my site. Now when I tried doing a 301 permanant redirect in my host's panel I got a looping error. What the **** is a looping and error and what do I need to do to do a 301 redirect for my site. And do I need one? 8) thanks

Hello mate, can't post a link cause I'm on my iPhone but google 301 redirect, click the webconfs link and the code you need is about 3/4 of the was down and should contain rewritecond - paste that into your .htaccess file and you're done!

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.(.+)$ [NC]

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://goldsteinmedia.com [R=301,L]

Copy and paste that into an .htaccess file, and place it in the root of your server.

The main purpose of this type of 301, is so that search engines do not penalise you for duplicate content, as they (or so I've been informed) treat the www.yoursite.com and http://yoursite.com as two seperate sites...

Eggman? Correct me if im wrong please!

purpose correct, code incorrect (yours does the reverse, redirect www to nonwww) follow my reply above.. Lol

lol I actually prefer to redirect to the non-www. I personally think that the www is a waste of time. I guess it's a case of personal preference.... Unless there is a specific reason to do it the other way that I'm not aware of?

not at all, I was just going with the version that Seth asked for :)

LOL valid point. As long as there is no specific reason to redirect to the www version, I think I'll stick to the non :)

that's cool, you're spot on with your understanding of it and that's what matters most!

Well, I do try lol. SEO, and the inner workings of the warped minds of search engines are not my strong point, but I would like to think that I do have at least a basic understanding!

@Seth: No problem mate. Is what the forum is here for lol
