this seems like this place could be a little treasure trove of information, so thought i'd register. so buckle up and brace yourselves for a barrage of questions

 

but not just yet...

 

for now, well, obviously i'm wanting to get into the wonderful (seemingly overflowing with people already!) world of web design/development

 

i've downloaded myself a copy of web design for dummies (apt title for me really) so i'll work my way through that, and go from there.

 

anyone have any other suggestions to have a look at after that/instead of that?

Just try stuff out, and make sure it seems fun to you. Have a go at making a basic website for your basketball club or your pet dog. No one has to see the end result if it doesn't work out.

You can try reading "Don't make me think" by Steve Krug. It's more of UX principles that design per se but I bet it's gonna be helpful to you especially if you want to learn fundamentals of web designing.

I'm a little beyond your stage of beginnerness but not much!

 

I used some of the Sitepoint books to learn HTML5 and CSS - also worth doing is http://www.codecademy.com/ - free courses and they are well structed.

 

All the best - there is a lot to it but the rewards are worth it.
