Wb design business web site review

Featured Replies

Hello i have just recently updated my portfolio to a business site. Please take a look at it and tell me what you think.

my web site is www.mfinch.ca

Hi there fellow Canadian! I really like the idea of the fence, but it's a bit sad that it doesn't tile well. A few things I noticed:

1. The header images appear to be JPGs (we can clearly see the artifacts); PNG should work better

2. There is three times "Web Design" in your title, which seems a bit much to me

3. I'd like to click there for a Free Qoute but the link doesn't work

4. Under 'Graphic Design', there are two commas one next to the other. Under 'Advertising', there is porfits rather than profit

5. The design feels a bit crowded, probably from a lack of white space and the use of bold text

6. I really like the TV image, it works well with the design

7. Is the bottom text supposed to be readable? Users can't read such small text, and robots are likely not to like the text either

8. The image used in the column separators at the top where "Swift Current Services" and "Swift Current Design and Graphic Design" are located have some inconsistencies: the bar doesn't stretch long enough and it seems wrongly aligned.

A priori, I think you need to work on the copy. I find it hard to read and I quickly lose interest in what is said. The copy also feels very repetitive, as outlined by the page's title. There are several typos to watch out for.

Despite all these small points, it's a good start. I'm really looking forward how you work from here. Keep it up!

Thanks for the comments that will not be the final copy for the web site i am getting an English major to write it all for me. I am working on the background image right now i will make the font in the footer a bit bigger and i will decrease the size,

Thanks for all the advice I am only about 2 hours into into the design and there is still a lot of work to be done i will keep posting my updates. Also i am having trouble getting the headers to look right i need something to make them stand out.

Also thank you for the comment on the tv i am going to do a series of them like an old school salon hairdryer that says does your web site need a make over.

Any other ideas for that image would be appreciated i want it to randomize so my site looks fresh.

Just a tip, but be careful about the copy your friend is writing, of course I wouldn't criticize his work without ever seeing it but make sure he appreciates that writing copy for the web is not the same as writing copy for many other mediums. Web users have very short attention spans so try to make your copy as short as possible. If you can cut 2 lines down to two words then do it! Otherwise nice site. For your background you might want to try and get your hands on a tiling texture or make one yourself. There are loads of good articles around the internet on how to do this (Try smashing magazine / Bitbox etc)

I recommend a fixed background..it can add some depth to the site by having the background not move with the rest of the divs when you scroll down.

You need to put snapshot of the website in your portfolio as well, optherwise, it wouldn't look attractive.....website design portfolio should be attractive...please visit our company's web portfolio......follow the links from my signature....

Not to be a douche or anything, dreamcon, but I hate corporate design like that on your company's website. It has no personality and could be used for a hosting company, webshop, or anything. Web site's should reflect what the company are doing and in that case, that is a bad webdesign.

And look at your budget prices. 0-$1000? The designs in your portifolio are not worth that. All designs looks like templates.

How is this related to Marshal_finch? I think his design is better than the Melbourne one.

I like the concept, but the fence image is just not working. Actually, the design isn't really working for me. Like Sono said, the generic online business look kills. Lots of your links aren't working, and it just needs more personality. Also, NOBODY holds their business card like that. Get rid of the human hand.

When I think of a site like yours (the idea, not your actual design), I think about twitter. (http://twitter.com/) Like, a fixed background image (not a repeating one, because yours doesn't look all that good to begin with, and doesn't repeat well) and it's a scene of a fence in the background with a sky and some clouds and some green grass done in the web 2.0 style. (vector) and the main page itself is simple and to the point. (use the Finch like a mascot)
