My Website looks stupid in IE6

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a massive problem with my website in IE6 and I can't figure it out. Basically the header image is appearing 10px or so down the page (not in line with the top where it should be) and the sidebar menu has shunted right down to the bottom of the page.

In IE7 and Firefox is looks fine (so to speak) so I know I'm doing something funny with CSS.

Any ideas?

Whilst I don't have a good version of IE6 installed (just a very slow standalone version installed), I'd recommend conditional comments to get this fixed up:

You can specify CSS code that will effect IE6 only :)

This sounds like basic positioning and margin problems really - just try out conditional comments, throw in some code and see what happens in IE6 :)

As an update on the above...I've now managed to resolve that my sidebar was appearing below the content, but still have the issue that my header is appearing lower down the page than it should. So if anyone has any suggestions on this one?

Just had a quick look at your css.

Try changing the margin on #page from this:

margin:auto;

to this:

margin: 0 auto;

I stress I've only had a quick look at your css though.

Believe I've sorted it, thanks for the help. I've added a simple "top" to the css, and hence it appears at the top.

If anyone spots anything else though, please let me know.

If the IE6 was not installed properly then that might be the problem . Try to install the IE6 once again and see.

My site is the same

My school has ie6 and the site has loads of gaps in it

Make sure you check through your code and try and use up to date methods.

<marquee> and <blink> are not really encouraged anymore!

One other thing is you are using repeated id's on your divs. Remember 1 distinct id per page.

Using classes could sort you out.

Extra gaps can also be caused by misinterpreted padding/margin or empty elements.

You have spans and paragraphs on the page with nothing in them - try removing these and see if IE6 is allowing for them.

Hope some of the above helps.

I pressume you made your website using firefox or IE7 you can fix your layout by checking and editing your layout in IE6 but that we would be a hassle to revert back to the old browser. You don't need to do that you can download a version of VMWARE that has IE6 on it its a virtual PC there you can view and fix your layout without losing your latest version of browsers.

Hope this helps. :)
